Weatherholt Receives 2013 NCAA Today’s Top 10 Award

Mary Weatherholt, a business administration graduate from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration and member of the Big Ten champion Husker tennis team, was recently selected as a recipient of the 2013 NCAA Today’s Top 10 Award. UNL leads the nation in recipients of this award with 17.

Each year 10 extraordinary student-athletes from among 450,000 throughout the country are selected for this award. Weatherholt and her fellow recipients will be honored at a celebration, January 18 during the NCAA Convention in Grapevine, Texas.

“We consider this award the most prestigious you can win,” said Dennis Leblanc, senior associate athletic director at UNL. “Mary’s accomplishments are even more impressive considering she suffered a torn ACL her junior year and came back to have such a tremendous senior season.”

Weatherholt was the first-ever Husker All-American tennis player, and finished as the 2013 NCAA Singles runner-up and two-time Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Year. Along with teammate Patricia Veresova, she also competed in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Her senior year she was awarded the 2013 ITA National Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award and earned a Big Ten Medal of Honor, which led to her winning the Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year award.

“This is a huge honor for Mary,” said Donde Plowman, James, Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of the UNL College of Business Administration. “Our student-athletes are continually recognized for academic success, which demonstrates how much time they spend both in and out of the classroom in pursuit of excellence.”

Weatherholt, who is originally from Prairie Village, Kan., finished her academic career with a 3.873 GPA and is currently an assistant coach at the University of Memphis.
