It’s hard to believe summer is almost over and another academic year starts August 20. We are excited to welcome our new and returning students back to campus and also meet their parents, alumni and friends of the college. We spent the summer hosting high school programs about business, polishing our soon-to-be-released strategic plan and preparing for a new semester. We also admitted our first students into our two new online master’s degree programs in finance and business analytics and hired some amazing new faculty and staff to support our programs in the college.
I hope all of you will join us for the
Back to School Bash on Friday, August 17, 2-4 p.m. and meet our CoB faculty, staff, students, alumni and business partners. It’s a great opportunity to meet people, enjoy live music and get a “Taste of Nebraska” with Runza sandwiches, Valentino’s pizza, Dairy Store ice cream, Kool-Aid and more.
There will be an opportunity to learn from faculty and staff about programs and offerings at CoB including:
-
The faculty and academic departmental staff who support our 10 undergraduate majors.
-
The staff in the Teaching and Learning Center, located in Hawks Hall (HLH) 014, who offer study groups, course mentors and supplemental support for challenging courses as well as workshops on topics such as developing study skills, managing test anxiety and time management.
-
The academic advisors in Business Advising and Student Engagement, who are located in HLH 125. They assist with class scheduling, staying on track to graduate in four years, success strategies, campus resources and more.
-
The career coaches in the Business Career Center (HLH 141) who partner with local businesses to find students internships and jobs and help students with resumes, exploring careers and more.
-
The staff in the Clifton Strengths Institute, who provide one-on-one strengths coaching to first-year students to maximize their success in college and beyond.
Additionally,
the Career Closet will be featured north of the grand staircase on the first floor. Operated by the Alpha Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, the Career Closet provides free new and gently used professional attire for CoB students to allow them to put their best foot forward at career fairs and job interviews. Undergraduate and graduate students can “shop” the sidewalk sale – just bring your NCard.
August, for many of us, is like beginning a new chapter. Each year, we get to Start Something because of the foundation built by faculty, staff and alumni who came before us. It saddens me to share the news about the death of Jack Goebel, former dean of the College of Business. He also held many other positions during his 43 years at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, including interim chancellor and vice chancellor of business and finance. We offer our condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. You can read more about him in the Nebraska Today website story:

I hope to see you at the Back to School Bash.
Sincerely,
Dean Kathy Farrell
