Dr. Seth Giertz Promoted to Associate Professor

Dr. Donde Plowman, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of the UNL College of Business Administration, announces the promotion of Dr. Seth Giertz to associate professor in economics with tenure. Giertz joined the College of Business Administration from the Congressional Budget Office in 2008.

“I see the result of the tenure process as a positive affirmation of my contributions to the university. I am delighted to receive this formal recognition of my work from the Economics Department, CBA and the university,” he said.

Since joining CBA, Giertz has consistently been recognized as one of the top researchers in the college. Most recently, he was awarded the Best Paper Award in 2013 and the Distinguished Research Award in 2012 by the college. He was also a Research Fellow in the University of Nebraska Research Development Fellows Program in 2010-11.

“Research is an important component of my job. The emphasis on research in addition to teaching and outreach made UNL especially appealing to me,” Giertz explained. “I have been fortunate my teaching focus in urban and regional as well as public economics have dovetailed closely with my research interests.”

His research agenda evolved from his experience in the tax analysis division of the Congressional Budget Office. While in Washington, D.C., he examined how individuals with different sources of income respond to taxation.

“Much of my more recent research is an outgrowth of the work I did at the Congressional Budget Office. My other research interests, focused on house prices and price bubbles, also stem from my time in Washington. I continue to pursue projects with economists working in government agencies.” he said.

Giertz has several research projects on his docket for the upcoming year. One project examines the impact of economic and policy uncertainty on the economy. He is also examining the factors that influence the spread of use-value taxation across the U.S. with CBA colleagues John Anderson, Baird Family Professor of Economics, and Shafiun Shimal, a Ph.D. student in economics. Additionally, Giertz is working with Jim Follain, senior fellow at the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government, and Robert Dunsky, principal financial engineer at the Federal Housing Finance Agency, to examine how equity or “bank capital” estimates vary across U.S. cities and by mortgage characteristics.

“I appreciate the support I’ve received from my department and CBA over the past six years. I believe this has played an important role in my success at UNL,” said Giertz.
