Ten international students in the College of Business earned Employment Readiness Certificates this spring.

College of Business students, faculty and staff recognized for recent achievements include: Ahmed Ahmed, Ahmed Al-Zadjali, Elaina Bailey, Shama Banu Shaik, Kylie Becker, Luke Bogus, Devan Buescher, Connor Bourdreau, Jason Chan, Audrey Erker, Dr. Scott M. Research + Discovery

  • Jennifer Davidson, assistant professor of practice in economics and president of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, and NCEE board members Dr. Scott M. Fuess Jr. and Eric Hallman spoke with NPR’s Marketplace on Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans in Nebraska. Davidson spoke on the close relationships between bankers and the community in Nebraska. Hallman mentioned how that close relationship helped guide clients through the process of quickly applying for emergency loans. Fuess, Steinhart Foundation Distinguished Professor of Business and chair of the Department of Economics, added that as a result of last year’s flooding in the region, agricultural, food processing and transportation industries are more familiar with the process of applying for government aid.   • Dr. J. Kalu Osiri, director of the International Business program and associate professor of practice in management, has been selected for the Reciprocal Exchange of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. This honor comes with an award of $5,000 by the U.S. State Department after competitive teaching grant process. The funding will sponsor his international development and educational efforts in Africa's Ivory Coast.
  • Shilpa Somraj, Ph.D. student, was selected as one of three award winners of the 2019 Institute for the Study of Business Markets (ISBM) Doctoral Support Award Competition. She will receive a support award for her proposal, "The Influence of 'Distance' Between Alliance Partners on IPO Outcomes," and named an ISBM Doctoral Fellow.
  • Dr. Biyu Wu, assistant professor of accountancy, authored a paper with Xiaotao Kelvin Liu of Northeastern University, titled “Do IPO Firms Misclassify Expenses? Implications for IPO Price Formation and Post-IPO Stock Performance.” Management Science recently accepted the paper for publication.

Learning + Transformation

  • Five business majors earned the recognition as a Chancellor's Scholar. The highest academic award the university offers, they earned an A in every undergraduate class. Scholars include: Caleb Krohn, accounting and finance major from Osmond, Nebraska; Trevor Lockard, finance major from Eagle, Nebraska; Derek Mikus, accounting and finance major from Lincoln, Nebraska; and Givon Washington, economics major from Roanoke, Texas.
  • Nebraska's team in the International Collegiate Sales Competition earned first place in its division in the qualifying round for the national competition in November. Teammates were: Nicole Hawthorne, junior marketing major from Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota; Kinzie Lukasiewicz, senior marketing major from St. Paul, Nebraska; Mary Morton, junior management major from Lincoln; and Abby Nelson, sophomore management and marketing major from Lincoln.
  • Three business students won the university's inaugural Global Case Competition, in which they developed a business plan to expand global market share for the competition's sponsor, Coloplast, a Danish multinational medical device and services company. The team included: Connor Bourdreau, freshman actuarial science major from Bourbonnais, Illinois; Ryan Nyffeler, freshman economics and finance major from Omaha; and Meghan Schuette, freshman international business major from Omaha, Nebraska.   • Luke Bogus, junior management and marketing major from Columbus, Nebraska, and Jacob Peddicord, junior computer science major and business minor from Kansas City, developed an app called Brim to help local restaurants and shops during the coronavirus pandemic. With the app, customers can order meals or drinks to-go at local restaurants and pay from their phone. "From the inception, we didn't really see it as a business opportunity, we always looked at it as a really cool way for students to help our community," said Bogus.   • Devan Buescher, sophomore international business and Clifton Builders management major from Lincoln, was named the March Student of the Month by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. As a student strengths coach, he coaches first-year business students on developing their natural talents. Buescher challenged himself by studying abroad in China, earning an international internship and pursuing a civic engagement certificate.
  • The Innocents Society and Mortar Board inducted eight business students based on their outstanding scholarship, leadership and service to the university and community. The Innocents Society inducted Ahmed Ahmed, accounting major from Lincoln. Students tapped as new members of Mortar Board include: Kylie Becker, actuarial science major from Osage Beach, Missouri; Luke Bogus; Cooper Grabenstein, agricultural business major from Smithfield, Nebraska; Simon Hovis, business administration major from Lincoln; Carli Pfeil, marketing major from Blair, Nebraska; Rohan Thakker, computer science and economics major from Lincoln; and Peyton Walker, supply chain management major from Fort Collins, Colorado.   • Skylar Lowe, senior economics major and Bureau of Business Research scholar from Omaha, Nebraska, earned one of three Boren scholarships awarded to students at Nebraska to study critical language. The Boren Awards program provides undergraduate and graduate students in the United States with funding to gain language skills and experience in countries critical to the future security and stability of the nation. Lowe plans to learn Hindi through the South Indian Flagship Language Initiative program.   • Ten students earned their Employment Readiness Certificates. Designed to help international students studying business to discover and develop skills to seek internship and job opportunities, the ERC program includes career development workshops, coaching appointments, group service projects and success skills development. The students earning an ERC this spring include: Ahmed Al-Zadjali, sophomore economics major from Muscat, Oman; Shama Banu Shaik, freshman international business major from Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands; Jason Chan, senior marketing major from Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia; Hana Lee, sophomore accounting major from Busan, South Korea; Yashaswini Manoj, senior economics major from Bengaluru, India; Kennedy Nguyen, senior marketing major from Saigon, Vietnam; Ryota Okutsu, junior economics major from Zama, Japan; Cindy Valladares, senior finance major from San Pedro Sula, Honduras; Yan Yang, junior management major Xi’an, China; and Dongrong Zhuang, senior economics major from Shantou, China.

Connection + Engagement

  • Elaina Bailey, senior management major from Kansas City; Audrey Erker, junior business administration major from Omaha; Sierra Hassel, a senior accounting major from Johnston, Iowa; and Alyson Lenz, senior marketing and management major from Council Bluffs, Iowa, received awards at the inaugural Clifton Strengths Institute (CSI) Recognition Ceremony. Bailey received the first-ever Mark Pogue Award, honoring the former CSI executive director. The Outstanding Builder Award presented to Bailey and Hassel honors students in the Clifton Builder Program who take on challenges to create change when others may back away. Erker and Lenz earned the Outstanding Coaches Award for exceeding expectations in their work to advance strengths.
  • Dr. Rachel Larson, assistant dean of academic and career development, served as a panelist on the April 13 episode of The Career Leadership Collective's The New Forward webinar series. The New Forward is an online news and practical strategies series designed to help college and university career services staff adapt in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis.   • Ryan Wolff, junior actuarial science and finance major from Brookfield, Wisconsin, received the university's Outstanding Student Organization Officer award. In his position with the Student Alumni Association, Wolff helps provide the fullest Husker experience through his events and socials put on throughout the year with the association.
