Two Reasons Machine Learning Can Help Your Business

Unlock the Potential of Machine Learning Over Lunch
Two Reasons Machine Learning Can Help Your Business
Dr. Steve Cooper explains the capability and challenges of machine learning in an upcoming Power Lunch on Thursday, September 19, at 11:30 a.m.
As the age of big data continues, machine learning and artificial intelligence play increasingly transformational roles in business. For those wanting to know more about the topic, Dr. Steve Cooper, associate professor of computer science and executive director of the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management, explores machine learning at an upcoming Center for Executive and Professional Development Power Lunch on Thursday, September 19. The session, titled “How Machine Learning Impacts Business,” will be held at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in HLH 202.

What is machine learning?
Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence used for data analysis. In this method, a computer identifies patterns within known data, builds models explaining the patterns and makes predictions about the unknown using those models. As the models receive new data, they independently adapt. This gives computers the ability to learn with limited human intervention. You are probably familiar with several everyday examples of machine learning, such as when Netflix recommends a related show.

Machine learning creates a competitive advantage.
You need to have a competitive edge to survive and thrive in today’s business environment. One way to gain an edge is through harnessing innovative tools to make better decisions. Any business within any industry can utilize machine learning to add automation to data analysis and make reliable, repeatable decisions. As usual, the early adopters of this technology will see the greatest returns.

Your data holds the potential.
Every business generates its own set of uniquely powerful data, which is the foundation of machine learning. Since artificial intelligence algorithms and tools already exist, the value lies within the application. A key to successfully applying these tools is to know what data you already have and what data you need.
