The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business released the latest Global Research Rankings of Actuarial Science and Risk Management & Insurance™. The rankings are based on articles published from 2018 to 2022.

The University of New South Wales Business School in Australia remained No. 1 in the world in the latest University of Nebraska–Lincoln Global Research Rankings of Actuarial Science and Risk Management & Insurance™ released by the College of Business at Nebraska.

Rounding out the top five business schools in the global actuarial science and risk management and insurance (RMI) ranking included: University of Wisconsin-Madison (No. 2), Macquarie University in Australia (No. 3 tie), University of St. Galen in Switzerland (No. 3 tie), University of Melbourne in Australia (No. 5 tie), and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (No. 5 tie). Nebraska ranked fifteenth in the world.

In the North American actuarial science and RMI ranking for business schools, the University of Wisconsin-Madison ranked first, followed by University of Georgia (No. 2 tie), Temple University (No. 2 tie), Florida State University (No. 4), and St. John's University in New York (No. 5). Nebraska ranked eighth in North America.

Florida State University saw the most movement in both business school rankings, including up three spots in the North American ranking and a four-spot jump to No. 10 worldwide. Two other universities increased in the North American ranking by three spots -- St. John's University to No. 5 and the University of Guelph in Canada to No. 7.

The Nebraska College of Business compiles the rankings from a database of faculty research published in five leading peer-reviewed actuarial science and RMI journals: Journal of Risk and Insurance (JRI), Insurance: Mathematics and Economics (IME), North American Actuarial Journal (NAAJ), ASTIN Bulletin: The Journal of the International Actuarial Association (ASTIN) and Scandinavian Actuarial Journal (SAJ). The ranking measures the research productivity of authors and their university affiliations. Separate rankings are calculated for programs housed within business schools and those not part of business schools.

The current rankings are based on articles published from 2018 to 2022. The database can be searched by journal, university and author. It also provides the ability to compare research productivity based on institutions' faculty counts with the per capita rankings feature.

Yijia Lin, V.J. Skutt Distinguished Professor and professor of finance, led the development of the first-of-its-kind ranking and compiles the rankings database with faculty, staff and students at Nebraska. Privately funded by Ameritas, a nationwide leader in insurance and financial strategies with headquarters in Lincoln, the ranking first debuted in 2019.

“This reputable ranking provides a benchmark to universities and faculty members for measuring their progress in making research contributions. It promotes and elevates the highest level of actuarial science and RMI research throughout the world,” said Lin. “Rankings are provided for the top 20 North American and the top 50 worldwide business and non-business schools, respectively, according to the cumulative number of their respective faculties’ publications in the five top-tier actuarial and RMI journals.”

The methodology for the rankings follows what was adopted by the Naveen Jindal School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas for ranking schools in leading business journals. Data used to compile the rankings dates from 1990 for the JRI, IME, ASTIN and SAJ, and from 1997, the inaugural year for the NAAJ.
