Building upon its popular Tax Institute, the Nebraska Center for Executive and Professional Development launches the new Nonprofit Management Institute this fall. Serving Nebraskan nonprofit professionals, the institute offers three executive certificate programs in management, finance and fundraising to help nonprofit leaders refine the skills they need to make a larger and lasting impact on the communities they serve. To register for one or all three programs, visit https://business.unl.edu/nonprofit.
"In Nebraska, we benefit immensely from the presence of nonprofit organizations. According to a 2019 report commissioned by the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands, there are more than 13,000 nonprofits in Nebraska. This figure implies that there are 7 nonprofits for every 1,000 Nebraskans and is significantly larger than the U.S. average of 4.8 nonprofits per 1,000 Americans. The same report mentions that 1 out of every 11 Nebraskans are employed by a nonprofit," said Emre Unlu, Paul C. Burmeister College Professor of Investments, professor of finance and executive director of the Center for Executive and Professional Development. "Given our charge of providing high-quality professional education to Nebraskans, it was just right to offer these purposefully crafted programs for nonprofit professionals. We believe that our programs will empower Nebraska's nonprofit leaders to make a bigger positive impact on the state."
The programs' topics are based on competencies successful nonprofit professionals commonly utilize. Attendees can sign up for one to all three programs based on their needs.
"The Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate is a generalist program that focuses on variety of skills to engage in successful planning and building financial resources through fundraising, marketing and communication, financial management, and effective board management," said Unlu. "The other two programs are more specialized and delve into the details of financial management and fundraising. Depending on their professional experience and needs, these certificates are appropriate for various nonprofit executives/professionals as well as board members with responsibilities in operations, marketing/communications, fundraising, human resources and volunteer management."
The programs include:
- Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate, Sept. 13-14, Lincoln — Examine the structure of a nonprofit organization and discuss how it works best to accomplish its mission. Learn about long- and short-term planning, the role of the governing board, the importance of marketing and communications, how to obtain financial resources, and how to best manage those resources to achieve the organization’s objectives.
- Nonprofit Financial Management Executive Certificate, Oct. 4, 5, 11 and 12 Mornings, Online — Financial management is key to the success of nonprofits. This online program focuses on reading and interpreting financial statements and IRS Form 990. Explore long-term financial planning and capital structure, as well as effective methods of preparing operating and cash budgets.
- Nonprofit Fundraising Management Executive Certificate, Nov. 1-2, Lincoln — Gain a better understanding of how fundraising fits into broader management responsibilities. Focus on developing a fundraising plan, including annual giving, corporate and grant giving, planned giving and donor retention.
Nationally known experts facilitate the programs. Led by Jim Croft, principal of JW Croft Consulting Group who served as executive vice president and chief financial officer for Chicago's Field Museum and teaches nonprofit management in the MBA@Nebraska program and for the Kellogg School of Management Center for Nonprofit Management at Northwestern University, program facilitators include: Bela Barner, MBA; Matthew W. Charlton, Ph.D.; Ashley Ramchandani, MPP; Katy Scrogin, Ph.D.; and Patti Tuomey, Ed.D. Their past work experience spans leading organizations such as churches, schools and museums as well as nonprofits like the American Red Cross and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
"Facilitators of this program are nationally recognized experts and bring a combined professional experience exceeding 100 years to the classroom. We are confident that they will offer a quality learning experience to our participants that will be immediately useful at work," said Unlu.
