Megan Friesen, assistant director of academic success and advising in the Office of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration, received the 2017 Dr. Charles Riedesel Outstanding Academic Advising Award. Presented to a full-time faculty or staff member at Nebraska who directly delivers advising services to undergraduates, the award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond to enable student success in academics and life.
 
“Megan has an incredible passion for always making sure our students come first. It is extremely important to her that she provides accurate, comprehensive, and consistent information that is on their level. She goes beyond by inquiring about their interests and aspirations and finds ways to use her knowledge for their benefit. Megan is a great resource for students and always points them to additional resources to further enhance student retention and engagement. This award certainly speaks to what Megan does every day in her role as an academic advisor for our college,” said D’vee Buss, assistant dean of Undergraduate Programs at the College of Business Administration.
 
Named after Dr. Charles Riedesel, chief undergraduate advisor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Nebraska, the award honors those who work in recruitment and advising students. Recipients must demonstrate consistently going above and beyond to create safe, inclusive and ethical environments for students, providing accurate and consistent information that support academic progress and life goals, and encouraging students to engage in activities outside the classroom.
 
“My role as an academic advisor is to guide students in their educational journey so that they are prepared for professional positions or post-graduate studies. Advisors have an opportunity to foster growth by encouraging students to get the most out of their college experience, whether it be through course and majors/minors exploration, involvement opportunities or networking,” said Friesen.
 
Freisen will be recognized at The Laurels, an annual award reception held in April at the University.
