College of Business Sends 13 Students to Career Expedition in Omaha

College of Business Sends 13 Students to Career Expedition in Omaha
Gavilon, an energy and agricultural commodities company in Omaha, provided insights to students about how global supply chain processes are managed.
The Business Career Center staff at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business traveled with 13 students to Omaha during fall break on a career expedition. Students on this career-oriented trip visited four different employers over the course of three days and networked with dozens of industry professionals and alumni.

“The Business Career Center regularly offers career expeditions around the nation. We know we have some students who want to work in the Omaha area and others who might not know about the opportunities so close to Lincoln,” said Dr. Chris Timm, associate director of employer experience and outreach. “By choosing Omaha, we were also able to offer an extra opportunity – the Meet and Greet Event – to involve additional employers.”

Students who traveled to Omaha went on site visits to Union Pacific, Gavilon, Renaissance Financial and TD Ameritrade. They also toured TD Ameritrade Stadium, where the College World Series is played annually.

Tamayo Zhou, a senior actuarial science and finance major from Tianjin, China, enjoyed visiting the different employers and getting a glimpse of their workplace cultures. The expedition provided insight about what it would be like to live and work in Omaha.

“I wanted to learn more about different career opportunities I could have in Omaha,” said Zhou. “It surprised me to learn Omaha has the second lowest unemployment rate among large cities and that made me much more confident about landing a job I want in Nebraska.”

Attendees learned more about the city of Omaha and networked with young alumni connected with the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce during a welcome dinner. Patricia Mayorga, the chamber’s talent center manager, believes the networking opportunities with students also benefited employers.

“This partnership is important for us because the goal of our department is to retain and attract people to live and work in the Omaha region. Partnering with colleges and universities is a great way to achieve that. It helps us showcase opportunities in our region,” said Mayorga.

In addition to visiting TD Ameritrade headquarters students also toured TD Ameritrade stadium where the College World Series is held.
