Big Potential: Armando Becerril

Armando Becerril
Armando Becerril has reaped the rewards of being a risk-taker. The senior accounting major from York, Neb., was born in Mexico and immigrated to the U.S. with his parents when he was 5-years-old.
“We literally came to Nebraska with nothing but my parents’ goal for a better life,” said Becerril. “My parents have always been there for me and have pushed me to be a better person.”
On track to graduate in three-and-a-half years, he made it a point to get to know his professors, students and staff, which led to several opportunities. As a New Student Enrollment orientation leader last summer, he even met actor Matt Damon.
“If you take the time to engage with people, especially faculty, you get great advice. The faculty at CBA care about the type of person I will be once I graduate,” explained Becerril.
After graduation in December 2014, he will intern with Deloitte & Touche in Omaha, Neb. The groundwork for his internship started in April when CBA lecturer Gordon Quitmeyer encouraged him to attend a presentation by James Kroeker, a 1992 alumnus and 2013 School of Accountancy Hall of Fame inductee. After listening to Kroeker speak, Becerril knew he wanted to be an auditor.

“As I listened to him talk, everything started to click and I had to meet him after the presentation,” he said. “As we were talking, he asked me what I wanted to do and I said, ‘Be an auditor with a big firm.’ He handed me his business card and told me to send him my resume, so he could forward it to the human resources department at Deloitte & Touche. The rest is history.”
Becerril was in constant contact with Deloitte & Touche in Omaha last summer and interviewed with them as well as other firms last fall. After that interview process, Deloitte & Touche stood out as the firm he wanted to pursue. He accepted his internship before the winter break.
“I am excited about my upcoming internship as I will be in the auditing division and assigned an account to work on. I can’t wait to learn everything about auditing,” he said. “This reward has definitely been worth the risk.”
