Research + Discovery

  • Daniel Kruger, senior accounting and finance major from Columbus, Nebraska, and three other Nebraska College of Architecture students won the 2019 Big Ten Student Design Challenge. The team, named the Groundbreakers, earned a $2,000 cash prize and funding to build their proposal on campus. For their final presentation, the Groundbreakers traveled to the Herman Miller headquarters in Zeeland, Michigan, where they received feedback on their designs from industry professionals and pitched their ideas to a panel of design experts.   • Social Science Space featured Dr. Jonathan O’Brien, chair of the Department of Management and U.S. Bank Distinguished Professor of Business, in an article for a paper he co-wrote titled “The Influence of Bondholder Concentration and Temporal Orientation on Investments in R&D.” O’Brien discusses how the research, published in a recent issue of the Journal of Management, proves to be innovative and impactful to the field of business and management.   • Dr. Eric Thompson, Nelson Professor of Economics and director of the Bureau of Business Research, was interviewed for a Feb. 22 article in the Lincoln Journal Star’s Directions publication on a Lincoln teacher balancing her day job with side hustles. Thompson said he thinks some people who have more than one job do so to fulfill multiple interests. He said people working multiple jobs is positive for the economy.   • Dr. Thompson also spoke about the effects of coronavirus on the United States economy on Channel 8 KLKN-TV. "The coronavirus outbreak in China and other countries in Asia is for sure somewhat negative for the U.S. economy because of the trade relationships we have with those parts of the country," said Thompson.   • Dr. Sunil Singh, assistant professor of marketing, co-authored an article titled “Business-to-Business E-Negotiations and Influence Tactics” published in the Journal of Marketing. The research explores salespeople’s use of influence tactics as textual cues to manage buyers’ attention during business-to-business e-negotiations to win sales contract award.   • The Strategic Management Society interviewed Dr. Laura Poppo, Donald and Shirley Clifton Chair in Leadership, and her co-author on how they got interested in their topic, its impact, where they see the field of strategy headed and what the paper means to them. The paper, titled “Do formal contracts and relational governance function as substitutes or complements?” won the 2019 Dan and Mary Lou Schendel Best Paper Prize. Learning + Transformation

  • Giancarlo Cimaglia, freshman actuarial science and finance major from Palatine, Illinois; Jake Litel-Smith, senior actuarial science and finance major from Papillion, Nebraska; Joel Unick, sophomore actuarial science major from Ankeny, Iowa; and Emily Woodrome, senior actuarial science major from Belleville, Illinois, earned first place at the 2020 Actuarial Science Case Competition. The annual competition features cash prizes, a networking lunch and Q&A with industry subject matter experts. Sponsors of the event included Milliman, the Casualty Actuarial Society, the Nebraska Actuaries Club, Zurich, Mutual of Omaha and Global Indemnity.
  • Umeda Islamova, director of business consulting at the Center for Entrepreneurship, joins the Joint Budget Committee Grant Review Team for Lancaster County this month. The committee features a partnership between the City of Lincoln and Lancaster County that provides investments to community-based nonprofit organizations offering resources to enhance city and county services for its most vulnerable residents.
  • Megan Christensen, assistant director of Business Advising and Student Engagement, will serve on the university’s First Generation Nebraska Advisory Board. Comprised of faculty, staff and students, the advisory board implements and assess programs and events for first-gen students. Topics addressed include first-gen student belonging, networking and engagement, faculty and staff development on supporting first-gen scholars, first-gen alumni and community engagement and organized capacity and infrastructure. 
  • The University of Nebraska–Lincoln named Dr. Scott M. Fuess Jr., Steinhart Distinguished Professor of Business, the next faculty athletics representative. Fuess will serve as the liaison between the Office of the Chancellor and the Husker Department of Athletics. His responsibilities include focusing on the welfare of student-athletes, NCAA compliance, developing and responding to NCAA legislative proposals and representing the university at NCAA and Big Ten Conference meetings.   • First-year Master of Arts in Business with a specialization in Intercollegiate Athletics Administration (MAIAA) students Michaela Brueggen, from Arcadia, Wisconsin; Ryan McFarlin, from Glenwood, Iowa; Tatu Tiililä, from Helsinki, Finland; and Cam Walker, from Lincoln, Nebraska, competed at the 2020 National Sports Forum Case Cup Competition in Atlanta, Georgia. Over 24 hours, the group created a marketing plan for NASCAR and Coca-Cola for the 2020 season that would increase sales for both parties. After presenting their plan to a panel of professionals in the sports industry, the students had the opportunity to network with other industry professionals. Second-year students Rose Hull, from Greenville, South Carolina, and Nicholas Hunt, from Hickory, North Carolina, attended the 2020 NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar in Indianapolis. The pair joined more than 200 graduate assistants and interns selected from across the country at the three-day professional development event.
  • Amy Lester, international business program coordinator, received a Dean’s Coin for her commitment to helping develop and expand the international business program as well as helping students through academic advising and study abroad facilitation.
  • The Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board named Matthew Ringler, junior actuarial science major from Lucas, Texas, the College of Business Student of the Month. A member of the Actuarial Science Club and UNL Gamma Iota Sigma, Ringler also volunteers for the Casualty Actuarial Society and the Husker Department of Athletics as a sports data analyst.

Connection + Engagement

  • The enrollment management team at the College of Business announced the Spring 2020 College of Business Ambassador cohort. The group of 11 students includes Devan Buescher, sophomore Clifton Builders management and international business major from Lincoln; Ashley Clegg, sophomore Clifton Builders management and pre-med major from Lincoln; Nick Earickson, sophomore international business major from St. Louis, Missouri; SeongJi Ha, junior business administration major from Pohang, South Korea; Grace Heggem, sophomore economics major from Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Audrey Kreun, freshman business administration major from Hull, Iowa; Patrick Malec, freshman finance major from Naperville, Illinois; Grace Partridge, sophomore management and marketing major from Rapid City, South Dakota; Kelby Roberts, junior management and marketing major from Central City, Nebraska; Taylor Shellenberger, freshman business administration major from Pueblo, Colorado; and Sidney Therkelsen, sophomore Clifton Builders management major from Elkhorn, Nebraska. This year, the ambassador program doubled in size, furthering the team’s outreach with prospective students and their families.
  • Seventeen College of Business faculty, graduate students and staff earned the Parents’ Recognition award from the UNL Parents Association. The award annually recognizes those who made a significant difference in students’ lives. This year’s awardees with the number of years they have received the award include: Dr. Sam Allgood (8), Jeff Burdic (5), Dr. D’vee Buss (10), Megan Christensen (3), Dr. Marijane England (2), Steven Hegemann (2), Dr. Elina Ibrayeva (2), Nam Hoang Le (1), Ashley Light (3), Kay Maresh (1), Dr. Samuel Melessa (1), Shanna Meyer (1), Dr. Laurie Miller (5), Rob Simon (3), Dr. Troy Smith (3), Jill Trucke (1) and Sue Vagts (6).
  • Jennifer Davidson, president of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education and assistant professor of practice in economics, discussed IRAs with 1011 NOW’s Taryn Vaderford.   • Laura Niles, external relations director, received a Dean’s Coin for leading the planning and execution of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District VI conference in Kansas City, Missouri, in January.
  • Dayna Larreau, administrative coordinator in the Department of Supply Chain Management and Analytics, and Lori Sorto, assistant financial manager, received Dean’s Coins for working to support the positive community culture in the college through their work on the Positive Post committee.
  • Ten faculty, staff and student workers received Dean’s Coins for going above and beyond their regular duties to host a special “We Are Nebraska” student performance in Hawks Hall for the College of Business community, featuring impactful stories about inclusion and well-being. They included: Emily Bergen, events and welcome center coordinator; Nery Cabrera, computer support assistant; Amanda Colborn, business operations manager; Ulysses Johnson III, management major from Denver and event coordinator specialist; Dr. Rachel Larson, assistant dean of academic and career development; Laura Niles, external relations director; Lance Schendt, audio-visual support associate; Kimberly Smith, associate director of Communications, Marketing and External Relations; Stephanie Smith, social media and design coordinator; and Garrett Stolz, writing and photography coordinator.
