College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

  • Özgür Araz, Ron and Carol Cope professor of supply chain management and analytics, and S. Sajeesh, Nathan J Gold Distinguished Professor of Marketing and associate professor of marketing, co-authored "Predicting mobility using limited data during early stages of a pandemic" in the Journal of Business Research. Their study with Michael Lash of the University of Kansas looks at consumer mobility during the pandemic in different metropolitan areas. It accounted for different factors and geographic regions to effectively predict shopping habits. Read the KU research story.
  • Jennifer Davidson, associate professor of practice in economics, Nebraska Council on Economic Education president and Nebraska Bankers Association Faculty Fellow, shared insight on best practices and mistakes students make with credit cards in Feb. 6 article on WalletHub. Read the article.
  • Eric Thompson, department chair, K.H. Nelson College Professor of Economics and director of Bureau of Business Research, was featured in a January 27 article in the Midlands Business Journal discussing the findings of a recent Bureau of Business Research report on commercial real estate usage and remote work in Nebraska. Learning + Transformation

  • The MBA@Nebraska program surged seven spots to No. 19 for best online MBA in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings and jumped three places to No. 15 for best online programs for veterans. For the first time, Nebraska also earned the No. 14 spot for best online business master’s programs in the nation. Read the College of Business story.
  • The MBA@Nebraska program ranked No. 8 among top online MBA programs in the latest ranking by The Princeton Review. Read the College of Business story.
  • Fourteen hundred business students were named to the College of Business Dean's List for their academic achievement in the fall 2022 semester. Read the College of Business story.
  • Nineteen individuals in the College of Business community completed Accelerated Strengths Coaching training as they work toward earning their Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach certifications. The faculty and staff who learned how to coach others to best use their natural talents include: Amy Bartels, assistant professor of management; Megan Christensen, assistant director of Business Advising and Student Engagement; Aaron Crabtree, associate dean of master's programs and executive development, KPMG Faculty Fellow in Professional Accounting and associate professor of accountancy; Jim Croft, Ph.D., JW Croft Consulting Group, Chicago, and instructor in the MBA@Nebraska program; Alejandro Diaz; Jimmy Downes, director of the School of Accountancy and associate professor of accountancy; Meike Eilert, lecturer of marketing; Andrew Hanna, Seacrest Teaching Fellow and assistant professor of practice in management and entrepreneurship; Rose Hull, associate director of the Teaching and Learning Center; Cal Koch, academic navigator in Business Advising and Student Engagement; Samuel Nelson, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and associate professor of practice in management; Megan Patel, assistant director of internship and job search strategies of the Business Career Center; Kylie Penner, academic advisor in Business Advising and Student Engagement; Jennifer Requenez; Kendra Ritchie, director of recruitment; S. Sajeesh; Mikki Sandin, assistant director of professional & life skills; Caitlin Smith, academic advisor in Business Advising and Student Engagement; and Emre Unlu, Paul C. Burmeister College Professor of Investments, professor of finance and executive director of the Center for Executive and Professional Development.
  • A team of six Husker Venture Fund students won the New England Regional of the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC). Team members included: Edwin Bahena-Flores, finance major from Omaha, Nebraska; Samuel DeZube, finance major from Stilwell, Kansas; Maria Heyen, international business and Clifton Builders management major from Astoria, Oregon; James Whebbe, finance and management major from Rosemount, Minnesota; and Alex Zlatic, actuarial science and finance major from Bloomington, Illinois. The team competed against Dartmouth College, New York University, Saint Mary's University, University of Oregon and Tufts University, and as winners of the round, they will compete in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Global VCIC Undergraduate Finals in late March.

Connection + Engagement

  • Uchechukwu Jarrett, Seacrest Teaching Fellow and associate professor of practice in economics, was named to the University of Nebraska Federal Credit Union Board of Directors.
  • Rachel Larson, assistant dean of academic and career development, was elected to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Board of Directors. Her two-year term begins July 1 for the professional association that connects more than 14,800 college career services professionals, university relations and recruiting professionals.
  • Taylor Shellenberger, management major from Pueblo, Colorado, was selected as a Student of the Month by the Nebraska Business Advisory Board. Highly engaged in FBLA-Collegiate, she served as president and high school conference director. She achieved top 10 finishes in national FBLA competitions and received the state's Member of the Year Award in 2022. She also served as a CoB Student Ambassador meeting prospective and new students, worked in the CoB Dean's Office and UNL's Big Red Business Center, interned at Spreetail, and volunteered for many area organizations including Good Life Halfsy, The Cat House, Husker Pantry and Back(Pack) to School for low-income families. Her nominators said she is an exceptional representative of the college and a leader with initiative who goes above and beyond.
  • Tyler Vander Woude, marketing and management major from Lincoln, Nebraska, was also selected as a Student of the Month. Highlights of his involvement so far at Nebraska include: Nebraska Business Honors Academy, serving as an Honors Peer Mentor Leader for the University Honors Program and volunteering at his church. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and a Third-Degree Level 4 Black Belt in Taekwondo. His nominator said he embodies the type of student deserving of this award for actively engaging in class with his peers, professors and guest speakers as well as serving his peers as a mentor and serving youth in the community.
  • Seven business majors served as student delegates to the annual U.S. Naval Academy Leadership Conference. The three-day conference in Annapolis, Maryland, features renowned leaders in business, the military and the government as well as engagement in dialogue and networking with student leaders from other civilian and military institutions surrounding the theme, Returning With Honor: Trials To Triumph. Students representing Nebraska Business included: Alexis Jeffryes, business & law and economics major from Columbus, Nebraska; Natalie Karrels, supply chain management major from Brookfield, Wisconsin; Blake Kokes, finance major from Grand Island, Nebraska; Hieu Luu, accounting major from Ha Noi, Vietnam; Whitney Schwisow, actuarial science major from Beatrice, Nebraska; Tristan Taylor, economics major from Lincoln; and Sophie Thomas, management and marketing major from Lakeville, Minnesota.
