International students thrive at the College of Business at Nebraska. Business students represent 60 countries and territories. At Nebraska, you’ll find both excellence in academic programs, faculty and career development, but also opportunities for hands-on learning in a state-of-the-art facility. You can choose from 11 different business majors, including the accounting, actuarial science and economics majors that are STEM-designated programs. This designation supports international students in obtaining a two-year OPT extension that allows you more time to gain work experience in the U.S.

New International Student Seminar

As a new international student enrolled in the College of Business, you will take the New International Student Seminar (BSAD 191) course during your first semester here. You will develop and apply academic skills needed to be successful in US higher education settings. Opportunities to make positive connections with faculty, staff and fellow students occur through tutor-student meetings, language support and peer interaction groups outside of class which revolve around learning strategies and academic success.

Employment Readiness Certificate

Earn your Employment Readiness Certificate (ERC) in a nine-week intensive career preparation program designed to help international students in the College of Business develop skills to seek internship and job opportunities. In the Certificate program, you will participate in career development workshops, individual coaching appointments, civic engagement activities, and in-depth conversations on success skills and cultural competency.

Conversation and Culture Pals

Improve your English and make a new friend through the college's Conversation and Culture Pals program. We match domestic or native English speaking students with international students. There are no mandatory group meetings, you simply meet with your Conversation and Culture Pal on your own time.

Business Advising and Student Engagement (BASE)

The staff in BASE are your resource for academic advising. Talk with them about academic programs and degree requirements, major choices, policies and procedures, and more. They can also help you get involved and meet people in student organizations and special programs.

Free Tutoring

Everyone can benefit from getting help on coursework through the FREE tutoring offered by the Teaching and Learning Center. You can take advantage of regularly scheduled tutoring assistance available for core classes or request help with specialized software and courses at a time that works for you. The center also coordinates Face Time with the Faculty, free lunches where you’ll spend time with faculty members outside of the classroom and discuss anything from your future to your favorite hobbies.

Family, Business Opportunities Shape Bernard’s Future

As an international business student at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Quincey Bernard spent his time jetting across the world for study abroad trips and honing his entrepreneurship skills. He did it all for one reason — to one day return to his hometown of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and give back to the country he loves by revitalizing and transforming Haiti’s economy.

“I want to do things for people back home. That’s the long-term plan,” Bernard said.

Bernard was inspired to study entrepreneurship by his parents. From humble beginnings, they went on to found their own successful company in Haiti 18 years ago.

Valladares Caps off College Career with Home in Mind
Student Builds Stronger International Student Community at Nebraska Business

Cindy Valladares, senior finance major from San Pedro Sula, Honduras, rarely passed up an opportunity. Her involvement enriched the experiences of many others, as well as her own, leading up to her graduation in December.

With an internship canceled the summer before her final semester, Valladares volunteered to take part in the college's first Career Accelerator Program. As part of a collaboration between the Business Career Center and the Clifton Strengths Institute, the six-week summer program allowed students to gain valuable experience through project-based work.

“The most important benefit of the Career Accelerator Program is the fact that you're working on your professional growth. Instead of being discouraged about not having an internship, especially when the pandemic started, you could either work on your weaknesses or learn a new skill. I thought, ‘Okay, I won't have a summer internship, but I still need to grow professionally,’” she said.
