College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Research + Discovery

  • The College of Business honored three faculty with research awards: Mirzokhidjon Abdurakhmonov, assistant professor of management, Emerging Scholar Research Award; Julie Wu, associate professor of finance, Distinguished Research Award; and Bret Sheeley, Ph.D. candidate in accounting, Ph.D. Student Research Award.   • Jessica Chen, computer science and economics major from Lincoln, and Victoria Diersen, economics major from Brookings, South Dakota, received undergraduate research awards for their Student Research Days presentations. Chen presented "Social Capital and Innovation," and Diersen presented "The Indian Gaming Regulation Act and Economic Development on Reservations." Both students were advised by Mitch Herian, project director of the Bureau of Business Research. Read the Nebraska Today article.
  • Varkey Titus Jr., Amy and J. E. Van Horne Jr Chair and associate professor of management, and co-authors published "Better to Be Loved By Some? Firm Flaunting as an Impression Management Strategy" in Academy of Management Review. Their research on how businesses can engage in ostentatious behaviors to display their affluence and robust resource base can reduce the impact of an unpredictable negative event. Firms can use a range of proactive impression management behaviors to reduce the impact of a negative event on firm outcomes. Read the AOM Insights blog post exploring the research. Learning + Transformation

  • The College of Business honored five faculty with teaching awards: Andrew Hanna, Seacrest Teaching Fellow and assistant professor of practice in management and entrepreneurship, Excellence in Teaching Award; Thomas Dotzel, assistant professor of marketing, Distinguished Teaching Award; Julian Atanassov, associate professor of finance, and Elina Ibrayeva, associate professor of practice in management, Online Graduate Programs Teaching Awards; and Bret Sheeley, Ph.D. candidate in accounting, Ph.D. Student Teaching Award.   • Nineteen seniors in the College of Business earned recognition as Chancellor's Scholars, the university's highest academic award for students who earned an A in every undergraduate class. Scholars include: Ellie Anderson, finance major from Leawood, Kansas; Zachary Buhman, actuarial science and finance major from Ankeny, Iowa; Haley Claussen, accounting major from Lincoln, Nebraska; Ava Dunne, management major from Elkhorn, Nebraska; Amanda Fuechtmann, supply chain management major from Prior Lake, Minnesota; Caroline Gidlow, marketing major from New Prague, Minnesota; Samuel Gilbert, actuarial science, finance and mathematics major from Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; Stephanie Herridge, supply chain management major from Lincoln; Hailey Hoogers, actuarial science major from Sioux City, Iowa; Emily Kraai, accounting major from Lincoln; Audrey Kreun, accounting major from Hull, Iowa; Kate Mathison, marketing major from Elkhorn; Cooper Moore, finance major from Plattsmouth, Nebraska; Cydne Munson, actuarial science major from Brookings, S.D.; Ryan Nyffeler, finance and economics major from Omaha, Nebraska; Kimberly Osborn, accounting major from Tilden, Nebraska; Charlie Peng, actuarial science, finance and computer science major from Omaha; Scott Peterson, accounting major from Lincoln; and WIlliam Weiner, actuarial science major from Sterling, Kansas.   • Three business students were among the first Nebraska students to earn a certificate for successfully completing the Peace Corps Prep program. Integrating coursework, hands-on experience and professional development, the program prepares undergraduates for international development fieldwork and potential Peace Corps service by building core competencies and students' expertise in one Peace Corps sector. The three students focused on the community economic development sector and included: Devan Buescher, international business and Clifton Builders management major from Lincoln; Katie Nelsen, management major from Lincoln; and Lucy Peterkin, business and law major from Omaha.   • Jennifer Mostek, director of Business Advising and Student Engagement, received the Excellence in Advising Administration Award from the National Academic Advising Association North Central Region, which honors leaders who make significant contributions to improving academic advising. Connection + Engagement

  • Five faculty and staff were honored for their service to the college prior to their retirements: F. Gregory Hayden, professor emeritus of economics, Marijane England, associate professor of practice emeritus in management, Ann Mari May, professor emeritus of economics, Thomas Omer, Delmar Lienemann Sr. Chair in Accountancy and professor emeritus of accountancy, and Tamera Ward.   • The College of Business honored three faculty and staff with service awards: Kasey Linde, director of teaching, learning and accreditation, D'vee Buss Students First Award; Jennifer Mostek, director of Business Advising and Student Engagement, Distinguished Service Award; and Brian Baugh, associate professor of finance, Faculty Service Award.   • Two business students received Student Impact Awards for their contributions to the university from Student Affairs. Sam Weber, management - leadership in organizations major from Lincoln, received the Sport Club Athlete of the Year award for his involvement in the Nebraska Waterski Club. Madeline Splichal, economics major from Lincoln, received the Husker Volunteer Designation for completing over 100 volunteer hours. Read the Student Affairs story.
  • Two business students were recognized at the end-of-year celebration for the first Inclusive Business Leaders (IBL), a cohort-based program of first-year business students who demonstrate a commitment to making Nebraska Business and the field of business a more inclusive environment for all. The honorees included: Josie Golka, advertising and public relations major from Omaha, IBL Change Agent Award, recognizing her involvement in improving inclusion on campus, and Ale Guiza Gonzalez, accounting major from Crete, Nebraska, IBL Community Builder Award, recognizing how they went above and beyond in making other IBL members feel welcomed, valued and respected.
  • The College of Business Communications, Marketing and External Relations team received two American Marketing Association Lincoln Chapter awards for special event and diversity, equity and inclusion marketing. They collaborated with CoB and University of Nebraska Foundation teams to increase the impact of the college's Scholarship Brunch and Inclusive Business Leaders program. Read more about the awards.
  • Paula Caldwell, associate director of career and professional development of the Business Career Center, presented "The Mentorship Blueprint" as a special virtual event for the Nebraska Women in STEM organization members on May 24. Mentoring is one of the ways members advocate for more women in STEM-related careers.
  • Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board named Maria Heyen, international business and Clifton Builders management major from Astoria, Oregon, Graduating Student of the Year; and Elizabeth Kenes, actuarial science and computer science major from Orland Park, Illinois, Student of the Year.
  • Rafe Chang, marketing major from Taipei, Taiwan, received the Student of the Month honor from the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. At Nebraska, he is involved in the Nebraska Aerospace Club, American Marketing Association and Supply Chain Management Club.
  • Sydney Gray, finance major from Tucson, Arizona, was selected by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board as Student of the Month. She maintains a 4.0 GPA while excelling in softball for the Nebraska Huskers and overcoming an injury. She also serves the community with volunteer work and her team as part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Nebraska Softball Unity Council.
  • Becky Koppelman, economics and supply chain management major from Delaware, Ohio, served on the 2022-23 Executive Vice Chancellor Student Advisory Board. Read the Nebraska Today article.
  • Lauren Lewis, marketing major from Omaha, received the American Marketing Association Lincoln Chapter Student Marketer of the Year award. The award honors an outstanding collegiate member who demonstrates superior leadership, service to AMA, academic achievement and impact on their community.  Read more about Lewis.
  • William Weiner, actuarial science major from Sterling, Kansas, received the Outstanding Honors Graduate Award. The University Honors Program selected exceptional graduates from each college based on their contributions to the Honors community and participation in Honors experiences. Read the Nebraska Today story.
