Research + Discovery

• The College of Business honored three faculty with research awards: Shivam Gupta, associate professor of supply chain management and analytics, Emerging Scholar Research Award; Tom Kubick, Delmar A. Lienemann Sr. Presidential Chair and professor of accountancy, Distinguished Research Award; and Rebecca Jack, Ph.D. student in economics, Ph.D. Student Research Award. Read about their research accolades. • Three faculty members were honored for their service to the college prior to their retirements: Donna Dudney, associate professor of finance; Tammie Fischer, lecturer in economics and former director of the UNL Center for Economic Education; and Janet Near, associate dean of faculty and research. Read the College of Business story.
• Jennifer Davidson, associate professor of practice in economics, Nebraska Council on Economic Education president and Nebraska Bankers Association Faculty Fellow, was featured in a WalletHub article about things to watch for when opening a checking account. Read the article.
• Uchechukwu Jarrett, Seacrest Teaching Fellow and associate professor of practice in economics, was featured in a WalletHub article about factors and changes in inflation and what can be done. Read the article.
• Fred Luthans, professor emeritus of management, was ranked 14th in the United States and 27th in the world by Research.com, an academic platform for researchers, in their 2024 list of Ranking of Best Scientists in the Field of Business and Management. He also received their Business and Management Leader Award for 2024. On Google Scholar, Luthans’ research has been cited 159,299 times.
• Janet Near, associate dean of faculty and research, Howard L. Hawks Chair in Business Ethics and Leadership and professor of management, and her research into business ethics and internal whistleblowing about how to apply it to improve organizational performance and prevent public relations disasters, were featured in a Q&A article from The Bugeater newsletter in April called "Helping Companies Avoid and Address Wrongdoing: Brought to You by Tenure." Learning + Transformation

• The College of Business honored four faculty with teaching awards: Laura McLeod, assistant professor of practice in marketing, Excellence in Teaching Award; Erkut Sönmez, associate professor of supply chain management and analytics, Distinguished Teaching Award; Silvana Trimi, associate professor of supply chain management and analytics, Online Graduate Programs Teaching Award; and Diego Villalpando, Ph.D. candidate in management, Ph.D. Student Teaching Award. Read about their teaching accolades.
• Fifty-five University of Nebraska–Lincoln students earned their undergraduate certificates of sales excellence and were honored at a luncheon hosted by the Center for Sales Excellence on May 3. Read the story.
• Students in the Philanthropy and Leadership (MNGT 411) course during the spring semester granted a total of $10,000 two local nonprofits Camp Kesem and Mourning Hope Grief Center in a hands-on project called Strive to Thrive Lincoln as they discovered how nonprofit organizations empower communities and philanthropy can foster positive change. • Katharine Fraser, international business major from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, received the William Marion Miller Prize for Academic Progress and Determination in French from the IAU Institute for American Universities at the graduation ceremony of her semester study abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France. She took French and business courses and lived with a host family for five months.
• 60 business majors are among the 197 graduates who completed the requirements of the University Honors Program. To graduate from the Honors Program, students must maintain at least a 3.5 grade-point average, complete a culminating senior project or research thesis, and fulfill other curricular requirements. • Nebraska Athletics gave Outstanding Scholar Awards to graduating seniors with a 3.9 cumulative GPA or higher. College of Business majors earning the honor at the A Night at the Lied event were: Matthias Algarin, management major, track and field; Sydney Gray, finance major, softball; Katelyn Mullinax, marketing and management major, track and field; and Abbie Squier, finance major, softball.

Connection + Engagement

• Economists and students gathered for the Nebraska Labor Summit, a conference created and hosted by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Department of Economics focusing on empirical research in labor economics. Keynote speakers David Card, recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and professor from UC Berkeley presented "The Role of Firms in the Labor Market. Where Are We Now?" and Alessandra Voena, professor of economics at Stanford University, presented on "How Are Gender Norms Perceived?" Read more about the summit.
• The College of Business honored three faculty and staff with service awards: Kevin Sueper, program coordinator and academic advisor in Business Advising and Student Engagement, D'vee Buss Students First Award; Kimberly Smith, associate director of Communications, Marketing and External Relations, Distinguished Service Award; and Özgür Araz, Ron and Carol Cope professor of supply chain management and analytics, Faculty Service Award. Read about their service accolades.
• Inclusive Business Leaders announced their awards for 2023-24 in May, including: Kouther Al-Ghanemi, freshman finance and international business major from Lincoln, Change Agent Award; Baden Brumbaugh, junior economics major from Bellevue, Nebraska, Mentor of the Year; Jordan Jager, freshman marketing major from Missouri Valley, Iowa, Quiet Achiever Award; and Taylor Streich, freshman international business major from Lincoln, Nebraska, Community Builder Award.
• Nebraska Business Honors Academy Students participated with 15 other teams in the Carolina Case Challenge hosted by the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Kaylee Campbell, sophomore actuarial science major, from Tracy, Minnesota, won the Best Presenter award. College of Business participants also included Keira Cummins, sophomore actuarial science major from Lincoln; Noah Koch, sophomore accounting and finance major from Platte Center, Nebraska; and Kira Pavlick, junior accounting and management major from Rising City, Nebraska
• Four teams of students won cash prizes in the Global Case Competition, sponsored in part by Bayer. The first place team included Nyagoa Deng, senior political science major from Omaha, Nebraska; Ian Gordon, junior marketing major from Lenexa, Kansas; and Adam Looney, freshman accounting major from Omaha, Nebraska. John Kalu Osiri, director of the international business program and associate professor of practice in management, co-wrote the case with Cindi Allen, Deputy Nebraska Secretary of State, inspired by a problem they witnessed on their recent trade mission to Kenya.
• Two business graduates earned University Honors Program awards: Rebecca Koppelman, economics and supply chain management, Delaware, Ohio, Outstanding Honors Graduate; and Juliana Quattrocchi, economics, Lincoln, Nebraska, Outstanding Honors Program Student Advisory Board Member. Read the story.
• Sarah Hindmand, senior actuarial science and finance major from Mount Prospect, Illinois, and Yee En "Esther" Liong, junior supply chain management major from Kota Tinggi, Johore, Malaysia, were named Student of the Month in May by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board.
• Kathy Farrell, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean and professor of finance, was featured by Women in BizEd, A Global Community to Champion Women in Business Academia and Higher Education. Read the Linkedin post.
• Aaryan Naik, economics major from Omaha, Nebraska, graduated in May and was named Graduating Student of the Year for 2023-24 by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board.
• Nikolas Mancio, accounting and finance major from Porto Alegre, Brazil, was named Returning Student of the Year for 2023-24 by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board and received a $500 scholarship. Read his story.
• The university's 2023-24 Student Impact Awards in May included four business majors: Nate Weber, junior accounting and finance major from Gilberts, Illinois, UNL Men’s Ice Hockey Club, Outstanding Student Organization Officer; Whitney Schwisow, senior actuarial science major from Beatrice, Nebraska, UNL Fastpitch Softball Club, Sport Club Athlete of the Year; and Luke McDermott, senior economics, political science and history major from Omaha, and Rylie Wright, sophomore marketing major from Hemingford, Nebraska, each received the Husker Volunteer Designation for completing over 100 volunteer hours.
