College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

  • School of Accountancy faculty were ranked No. 1 in Nebraska in the latest BYU Accounting Research Productivity Ranking, placing them in the top 15% for faculty research among over 600 national and international institutions measured. Nebraska earned the recognition of No. 5 in archival tax research worldwide and No. 6 archival audit worldwide based on the total research output of the school's faculty in the top 12 peer-reviewed accounting journals.
  • Dr. Christopher Mann, assistant professor of practice in economics, was quoted in a Feb. 10 USA Today fact check on how state unemployment rates have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He said states such as Nebraska rely less on tourism than some other states and have not been drastically impacted by reduced travel. The story has been picked up by MSN.com and Yahoo! News.   • Dr. Alok Kumar, W.W. Marshall College Professor and associate professor of marketing, was named as an associate editor for the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, one of the premier journals in marketing. The appointment comes after Kumar was recognized among the 2020 top productive scholars based on his publications over a 10-year period in the American Marketing Association's premier publications – the Journal of Marketing and Journal of Marketing Research.   • Dr. Troy Smith, assistant professor of management, co-authored a recent study showing that after abusive behavior some managers fake nice rather than make nice with employees as a means of repairing their social image. Learning + Transformation

  • Nearly 1,400 College of Business students earned Dean’s List recognition for academic excellence in the fall semester. Read the story at: https://go.unl.edu/x7rk.
  • A team of five business students won the CFA Research Challenge sponsored by the CFA Society Nebraska. The winning team advances to the March sub-regional competition in the global financial analysis and ethics competition. Team members included: Carter Eades, sophomore finance major from Elkhorn, Nebraska; Matthew McNulla, junior finance major from Aurora, Colorado; Ryan Nyffeler, senior economics and finance major from Omaha, Nebraska; Brian Potts,  junior economics and finance major from Laurel, Nebraska; and Tyler Royal, junior accounting and finance major from Omaha.
  • Twenty business majors completed the Winter Career Accelerator program coordinated by the Business Career Center and Clifton Strengths Institute. The program supported students who may have not been able to complete internships due to COVID-19 by advancing their career development and helping them gain targeted skills and experiences. Participants included: Mikayla Algeo, sophomore marketing major from Aurora, Colorado; Khaliun Battogtokh, junior economics major from Ulaanbaata, Mongolia; Austin Berry, junior business administration major from Omaha; Marissa Bollinger, junior finance major from Omaha; Daniel Cerni, sophomore international business major from Canberra, Australia; Sarah Damlo, sophomore marketing major from Lakeville, Minnesota; Morgan Dickey, senior management and advertising and public relations major from Lincoln; Nicholas Furgason, senior management major from Littleton, Colorado; Leah Glazer, senior marketing major from Las Vegas; Chloe Higgins, junior economics major from Nebraska City, Nebraska; Justin Ho, junior economics and computer science major from Bukit Mertajam, Malaysia; Sam Lilly, sophomore finance major from Omaha; Brent Miller, junior accounting and finance major from Omaha; Reese Munson, freshman finance major from Omaha; Camryn Myers, junior business administration major from Knoxville, Illinois; Doris Ngabgna, senior actuarial science major from Lincoln; Anh (Annie) Nguyen, freshman accounting major from Saigon, Vietnam; Randy Rafert, freshman finance major from Gresham, Nebraska; Kelly Shepsko, junior marketing major from Douglassville, Pennsylvania; and Haley Szymczak, freshman accounting major from Bartlett, Illinois.
  • Fifty students were named strengths coaches for the 2021-22 academic year. The students will join returning coaches to mentor nearly 1,000 first-year students in the College of Business. Read more at: https://go.unl.edu/ysjo.
  • Dr. M. Colleen Jones, professor emeritus of management, and her late husband, Melvin Jones, former vice chancellor for business and finance at Nebraska, were featured in a Feb. 21 column by the Lincoln Journal Star’s Cindy Lange-Kubick. Jones started and leads the Melvin Jones Scholar Community at Nebraska, which provides community connections and other assistance to minority students. Read more at: https://go.unl.edu/25c9.
  • Izu Mbaraonye, third-year Ph.D. student specializing in management, presented at the webinar, "Shape the Future of Diversity in Business with a Ph.D.,” as part of the Big Ten Academic Alliance Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Doctoral Education Initiative. He and other panelists shared how a career in academia empowers them to lead the future of business.
  • Dr. Kalu Osiri, director of the International Business program and associate professor of practice in management, was profiled in Nebraska Today for his work in cultivating Huskers' global mindsets so students can gain leadership and emotional intelligence and work through the ethical questions of international business. Connection + Engagement

  • College of Business donors made 350 gifts to support future business leaders as part of Glow Big Red, 24 Hours of Husker Giving. Their gifts totaled more than $45,388 and will go to support scholarships and the college's greatest needs.
  • More than 50 faculty, staff and student volunteers called nearly 3,700 business undergraduates over the extended winter break to share information about resources available, hear feedback and help students feel connected to the college community. Read more at: https://go.unl.edu/pjfr.
  • Four business majors were selected as New Student Enrollment leaders for 2021-22. They will participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of summer enrollment, transfer orientation, Big Ten Welcome, Husker Dialogues and other activities during the year. NSE leaders include: Audrey Kreun, sophomore accounting major from Hull, Iowa; Bobby Martin, junior marketing major from Omaha; Lucy Peterkin, junior international business major from Omaha; and Sara Segal, sophomore management and marketing major from Omaha.;
  • Ruoxi Liu, a Chinese-American freshman international business major, was quoted in the Daily Nebraskan in a story about combatting anti-Asian racism. She encouraged students to challenge themselves to ask bold questions to better get to know Asian students to help be a more inclusive community. Read the story at: https://go.unl.edu/6djb.
  • Michael Schneider, a senior economics and mathematics major from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was recognized as the Student of the Month by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. Schneider is a Bureau of Business Research scholar and member of the Nebraska Business Honors Academy. He interned for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, the Nebraska Department of Mathematics, Sycamore Education Development, and studied abroad in the Nebraska at Oxford Program.
