Planning Your Degree

What is a catalog/catalog year (CY)?

The academic catalog contains the set of rules, regulations, policies, programs, requirements, and courses for a given academic year. Students are normally bound by the requirements of the catalog in effect the academic year they were admitted to their degree college. However, if students have since declared a major or minor that had not been offered when they were admitted to their degree college, their catalog year may differ.

The Undergraduate Catalog webpage features the most current academic year's catalog. Older catalog years can be found by hovering over the Academic Policies tab on that webpage and selecting Archived Catalogs.

Where do I see what classes I need to graduate?

Degree requirements can be found in your Degree Audit. Degree Audit is a tool in MyRED that outlines requirements needed to complete your degree. The Degree Audit shows your progress, including completed (both UNL and transfer credit), in progress/registered, and remaining requirements. Degree Audit can be found in MyRED > Degree Audit > See Progress.

Is there a recommended sequence for my coursework?

Yes. The College of Business has developed Sample Four-Year Plans for each of our majors. The plans can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog and in your Degree Audit. These plans were developed as guides. Be sure to double check your specific course sequencing and consult with an advisor.

Will the courses I need to graduate be available?

Not all courses are available every semester. Plan ahead in scheduling the last three semesters of coursework to ensure a timely graduation. You may use the typical Business Course Offerings webpage as a reference to assist in planning along with consulting an advisor.

What are ACE courses?

Achievement Centered Education (ACE) can be considered UNL’s general education requirements. The courses are outcome-based and designed to enhance the undergraduate experience by providing broad exposure to multiple disciplines, complementing the major, and helping students develop important reasoning, inquiry, and civic capacities. There are 10 ACE categories and all UNL students complete each of these. For College of Business students, 6 of the 10 ACE categories are already built into specific degree requirements (ex. ECON 211/212 satisfies ACE 6). CoB students only need to choose ACE 4, 5, 7, and 9.

Can I use one ACE course to satisfy two requirements?

Yes, depending on the requirements. If a course is certified within two ACE categories, it can only be used to satisfy one ACE category.

For students on catalog years prior to 2025-2026: ACE courses can be double counted with the 300/400 level requirement. Some ACE 9 courses can also be used to satisfy the International Business Course Requirement (IBCR). See the online Undergraduate Catalog or visit with an advisor for full details.

What is an elective?

An elective course can be any course that does not already fulfill a degree requirement in the College of Business and is used to meet the 120-credit hour requirement. These courses can also be used to pursue a second major or minor in or out of the College.

Do I need elective classes?

All majors within the College of Business require some amount of elective coursework for the degree. Some students may satisfy electives with transfer credit. Talk to your advisor to verify how many electives you have remaining.

Do I need to take an International Business course?

It depends. Students on the 2025-2026 catalog and after do not need an International Business course (IBCR). All students on catalogs prior to 2025-2026 are required to take an International Business Course except for Accounting majors. Students who plan carefully can double count their International Business course (IBCR) in their Business Core-Major, Business Elective, second major, minor, or possibly ACE 9. A list of courses that satisfy the IBCR requirement can be found in your Degree Audit.

What are the requirements to declare into the College of Business from another UNL college?

A University of Nebraska cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at the time of declaration is required in order to declare a major in the College of Business. If a student does not have a University of Nebraska GPA yet, then the UNL Admission requirements are enforced.

How do I add/change my major/minor?

Schedule an appointment with a College of Business advisor to discuss declaring or changing a major within the College, or to discuss adding a minor as a College of Business student. An advisor will submit the declaration/change requests for majors/minors. If interested in declaring a major within a different UNL college, contact that college’s advising office for scheduling assistance.

Do I need to have a minor?

No. The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at UNL does not require the completion of a minor.

Should I consider a minor?

Adding a minor, either in business or in another field, allows you to explore other areas in depth.  A minor may also help you to stand out from other job candidates, making you more marketable. Many minors (not all) range between 12-18 credit hours and may fit within your elective degree requirements if planned carefully.

Registering for Classes

When can I register/enroll for classes?

Your registration time for fall and spring enrollment is assigned in MyRED Messages approximately 2 weeks before priority registration begins. This is when your enrollment unlocks and you may continue enrolling until the last day to add for that semester/session. Summer enrollment begins for everyone at the same time. Check the Academic Calendar for that date.

What is priority registration?

Priority registration is when eligible students may begin enrolling for the following spring or fall term. A registration time is assigned to each student based on their current class standing which does not include in-progress classes. This assigned time is when a student may begin registering. The first 3 business days of priority are for Senior standing, the next 3 business days are Junior standing, etc. Note: Senior standing is 89+ credits earned, Junior is 53-88, Sophomore is 27-52, and Freshmen is 0-26.

How do I know what my class standing is?

Class standing is determined by the number of semester credit hours successfully completed and is based on the ranges below. (Note: Class standing for Priority Registration does not include in progress credits.) You can find your class standing at the top of your Degree Audit.

Freshman = 0-26 credit hours

Sophomore = 27-52 credit hours

Junior = 53-88 credit hours

Senior = 89+ credit hours

How do I find course information, such as descriptions and prerequisites?

Course descriptions and prerequisites can be found in several locations, including the Undergraduate Catalog, Stellic Degree Management, and in MyRED within current semester course offerings.

Why can’t I find a course when I search for it in MyRED Enrollment Scheduler?

The most common reasons that a course can’t be found are:

  • The course isn’t offered in the term being searched
  • Filters are set in a way that excludes the course (ex. Filter is only for open courses and the course is waitlisted/full; filter doesn’t include online/distance delivery and the course is online; filter doesn’t include 8 week/mini session and the course is in that format)
  • The course is hidden. This may be the case if you’re looking for a course associated with a special program you’re in, such as the Undergraduate Certificate Program in Sales Excellence.
When would I need a permission code/number?

Common scenarios a student may need a permission code are:  if completed transfer coursework has not been received and processed by UNL and is a prerequisite for a course you’re trying to enroll into, if you’ve received special permission to be in the course, or if the course requires department consent (and you’ve received it).

Where can I request a permission code/number?

Requests for a business course permission code/number can be made through the Course Override form. For non-business courses, their respective colleges have different request processes.

How does a waitlist work?

Some classes have an option to add yourself to a waitlist if the class is full. This puts you “in line” for the class in the event that seats become available (typically due to enrolled students dropping the class).

If someone drops a class that is full, the waitlist will run overnight. MyRED Will automatically enroll the first person on the waitlist, IF they:

  • Are not enrolled in another section
  • Do not have a time conflict
  • Do not have any registration holds, and
  • Will not go over the maximum credit hour limit.

If person #1 cannot be enrolled because of one of those issues, then MyRED will try to enroll person #2, #3 and so on, until either the class is full again or MyRED has checked everyone on the waitlist.

If utilizing a waitlist, it is recommended to have a back-up plan in the event you do not get into the waitlisted class.

How do I know my position on a waitlist?

You can check your position on the waitlist in MyRED.

  1. Hover on Enrollment > click Edit Enrollment. A pop-up window will appear.
  2. Select the semester.
  3. Click the tab labeled My Class Schedule
  4. Select list-view and make sure Show Waitlisted Classes has a checkmark next to it. A schedule should appear with waitlisted classes including along with your position number.
How do I make changes to my schedule?

You will make changes in MyRED if the drop/add deadline for the term has not passed. Registration tutorials are available for various registration adjustments, including how to drop/withdrawal, how to swap, how to waitlist, etc. It is recommended to talk with your advisor prior to making changes.

Can I switch sections/professors?

It depends. If the drop/add deadline for the term has not passed and the desired section is open, then switching is a possibility. It is recommended to use the “swap” function in MyRED when switching sections of a class to ensure you do not get dropped from your current section unless successfully enrolled in the new section.

How do I know where my classes are located?

You can find the location for each class in MyRED on your class schedule. For courses located in Howard L. Hawks Hall (HLH), you can refer the HLH Building Map. To determine what building codes refer to or where on campus a building is, you can refer to UNL Campus Maps or use the Nebraska App.

Courses & Grading

What is the difference between a co-requisite, a prerequisite, and a course being allowed concurrently?

A co-requisite refers to a course component (ex. recitation, quiz and/or laboratory class) that is required to be taken at the same time as the course lecture. (Both must be included at the time of registration.) A prerequisite is a course or requirement that must be completed before enrolling in a course. If a course is allowed concurrently with a given course, then the concurrent course may either be completed prior to or at the same time as the course.

What is an antirequisite?

UNL offers some courses that overlap in content, therefore, students may not earn credit for both courses. These courses are called antirequisites. Visit the Academic Policies & Procedures webpage for more information and a listing of antirequisites.

Can I take a course Pass/No Pass?

Pass/No Pass stipulations are listed in the Undergraduate Catalog. P/NP courses may only count toward the general elective requirement. ALL courses for the Non-Business (ACE courses) and Business Coursework requirements (Business Core, Major, and Business Elective (if applicable)) must be taken for a grade unless the course is only offered as P/NP (ex. BSAD 111, 222, etc.). For students on catalogs prior to 2025-2026, the International Business Course Requirement and the 300/400 Upper-Level Requirement must also be taken for a grade. Business students are allowed to count a maximum of 6 credit hours P/NP toward the degree (excluding BSAD 395 (and cross-listings) Internship credit), depending on their catalog year. Courses taken for a minor may also need to be taken for a grade, depending on the minor. We recommend you talk to an advisor prior to taking a course P/NP to make sure the course will fulfill a graduation requirement. Note: A Pass is equivalent to earning a C or higher.

How do I change a course to/from Pass/No Pass?

Talk to an advisor. You will change your course status through MyRED, but it is in your best interest to talk to an advisor beforehand to make sure it will count for your degree. A tutorial explaining how to change a course’s grade option can be found on the Registration Tutorials webpage.

I took a course as Pass/No Pass instead of graded (or vice versa) and now I need to switch it. Can I do that?

Maybe. If you’re currently in the course and the Pass/No Pass deadline has not occurred yet, you can change your “grade option” in MyRED. If the deadline has occurred or the course was in a prior semester, meet with an advisor to discuss the potential for submitting a Grade Option Appeal pending eligibility.

Do I need to retake a class if I earn a C- or lower?

It depends. You may need to talk to an advisor. If the course is a prerequisite to another course that requires you to earn a C or higher in the prerequisite, you will need to retake it. For example, you must earn a C or higher in ACCT 201 to be eligible for ACCT 202. If you earn an F in a required course, you must also retake it.

If the course is not a prerequisite with minimum grade requirement for another course, you do not have to retake it as long as you earned credit for the course (a D- or higher). If the course is not required for your degree, talk with your advisor about whether retaking it is the best option. Note: Some minors require a C or higher in minor courses.

What is the lowest grade I can get in a class?

A D- grade will count toward the business degree. However, if a specific grade is required to advance to a next level course or to count toward a minor/certificate requirement, the D- may not be sufficient. Additionally, business students must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA to continue in many upper-level business courses as well as to apply for graduation.

What’s the difference between dropping and withdrawing from a course?

Dropping a course occurs earlier in the semester and results in the course being removed from your transcript. Withdrawing from a course occurs later in the semester and results in a W appearing on your transcript.

If you drop/withdraw from a course that is required for your degree, you will have to retake it. When thinking about dropping/withdrawing from a course, it is important to consider how the drop/withdraw will affect your total credit hours, financial aid eligibility, full-time status, GPA, and timeline for graduation. If applicable, it may also be beneficial to consult with Husker Hub (financial aid/scholarships), Military & Veteran Success Center (military/veteran benefits), or International Student & Scholar Office (immigration/student visa).

How do I drop or withdraw from a class?

Talk to an advisor. You drop/withdraw from courses through MyRED but it is in your best interest to talk to an advisor beforehand to make sure it is okay to drop/withdraw. A tutorial explaining how to drop/withdraw from a course in MyRED can be found on the Registration Tutorials webpage.

What does a W on my transcript mean?

A W means that you withdrew from a course after the drop deadline. It does not state why you withdrew (grade, interest, changed major, etc). It will be noted on the transcript, is not replaceable, and will not affect your GPA. Meet with an advisor if you have additional questions.

Where do I find important academic dates and deadlines, such as the drop deadline?

The Academic Calendar is where important academic dates and deadlines can be found. Examples of the types of dates/deadlines are: student holidays/breaks and UNL holiday closures; course registration dates; semester start date, finals week and graduation; last day to drop a course, withdraw or change a course to/from Pass/No Pass; refund deadlines; graduation application submission deadline.

Academic Support & Success

How do I meet with an Academic Advisor or Academic Navigator?

Advisors are available to meet via scheduled appointments and drop-ins. Appointments are recommended since they ensure a specific time for you to meet with no wait time. You can schedule an appointment in Student Success Hub or by contacting the Business Advising & Student Engagement Office front desk at 402-472-2310. Drop-ins are available on a first-come, first-serve basis pending advisor availability and are intended for quick questions. Drop-ins are typically available 8:30am-4pm except during the 12-1pm hour and Tuesdays when drop-ins begin at 1pm.

What is an Academic Navigator?

Academic Navigators provide integrated support for a wide variety of student concerns — personal, academic, and financial — and connect students to appropriate campus and community resources. Students may work with an Academic Navigator after being referred by a faculty or staff member, or they may seek assistance on their own.

When should I go to my Academic Navigator instead of my Academic Advisor?

Students can schedule with an Academic Navigator when struggling in a class, facing financial difficulties, experiencing personal challenges, or when they’re simply unsure where to find support. Academic Navigators provide personalized support by helping students develop success plans, connect with campus and community resources, and navigate obstacles that may affect their academic performance or wellbeing.

Students should schedule with an Academic Advisor when seeking help with academic decisions related to their degree, such as course selection, degree requirements, major exploration, academic policies, and graduation planning.

Is there free tutoring?

Yes! The Teaching and Learning Center (located in Howard L. Hawks Hall) offers free tutoring for most business classes and MATH 104. Free tutoring for math can be found in the Math Resource Center (Avery Hall) as well as through CAST Study Stops (Love Library South). Study stops also offer free tutoring for other courses.

How can I contact my professor?

The first place you should look for your professor’s contact information is your course syllabus on Canvas. The syllabus may include their preferred method of contact. As a second option, you can use the Nebraska Directory. Be sure to speak/write professionally, and include your name, NUID, course and section number/time, and your specific question.

Do I need to have a 2.5 cumulative GPA to remain in the College of Business?

A 2.5 cumulative GPA is a prerequisite for many business courses and is essential when applying for graduation. If your cumulative GPA falls below 2.5, you may remain in the college but should contact an advisor to discuss strategies to raise your cumulative GPA.

How can I raise my GPA to a 2.5?

The most effective way to increase a GPA depends on your situation. Meet with an advisor to discuss options. In some cases, you should retake courses in which you received a C- or below. The new grade received in the course completely replaces the old grade in your GPA. (Note: Both grades remain on your transcript.) In other cases, taking a new, required course and earning a grade that is a B- or higher may be most effective.  You can use the GPA Calculator to estimate how your GPA might change in different course grade and retake scenarios. Consult an advisor if you have questions about the numbers to input in the calculator.

What does it mean to be on Initial Academic Warning?

Students are placed on Initial Academic Warning when their cumulative or semester GPA falls below a 2.0 indicating there may be some challenges that need addressed. A hold will be placed on your account. You should meet with your advisor to discuss those challenges and make a plan for academic success going forward as well as to have the hold removed.

How do I get off Academic Warning?

Students who earn a 2.0 semester and cumulative GPA in their next enrolled semester after being placed on Initial Academic Warning will return to Good Academic Standing. If those GPA marks are not met in the following semester, students risk moving to Academic Warning Before Dismissal (i.e. get one more semester to hit the GPA mark) or possible Dismissal from the university.

Transfer Credit

Can I take courses at another institution?

Yes. A student can transfer in a maximum of 60 credit hours from a 2-year institution and international institutions and 90 credit hours from a 4-year institution. However, there are various rules concerning transfer courses and the way they count toward your degree. It is highly recommended that you meet with an advisor before taking transfer courses. Please note that business courses from a 2-year institution will only transfer to UNL at the 100/200 level.

Can I retake a course at another institution and have it replace a UNL course grade?

To replace a grade in a course you took at UNL, you must retake it within the NU system, consisting of these institutions: Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney. Once the new grade is earned and transferred to UNL, additional steps will need to be taken to complete the recalculation. Talk with your advisor to learn more.

Grades do not transfer from any other institutions, so it is not possible to complete a grade repeat outside of the University of Nebraska system.

How many business courses can I transfer into my UNL Business degree from another institution?

For students on the 2025-2026 catalog and forward, a maximum of 18 hours of required business coursework (Business Core, Business Major, and Business Elective) may transfer toward the business degree. Further restrictions include:

  • Maximum of 1 300/400 level transfer course (3 hours) in the Business Core
  • Maximum of 1 transfer course (3 hours) in the Business Major
  • A maximum of 3 hours may transfer toward each subsequent business major and/or minor. These 3 hours do not contribute toward the 18-hour limit noted above.

Variations of the above rules may only occur through an appeal made through an advisor in BASE.

How do I know how a course will transfer to UNL from another institution?

Check the Nebraska Course Equivalency List to determine how a course will transfer back to UNL Nebraska. If you are unable to find a particular transfer course from another institution, visit with an advisor about the possibility of having the course evaluated. An evaluation will require you to obtain the syllabus from the other institution to submit to UNL for review. Consult an advisor to verify if the transfer coursework will apply toward your degree.

Will my international credit transfer?

It depends. A student can transfer up to 60 credits from an international institution. Business courses from an international institution may only transfer at the 100/200 level unless the institution is AACSB accredited. Students will need to work with an advisor to discuss the process of having courses evaluated to determine if they will count toward degree requirements. (Note: International credit earned through study abroad has different policies.)

How do I send my transcript from another school to UNL?

Institutions typically have a page on their website with information on how to request a transcript. Try searching “official transcript” or “request transcript” on that institution’s website. Another option is to call the institution’s Registrar’s Office for assistance. It is recommended to send electronically, if available, as it tends to be the quickest.

How do I request my official UNL transcript be sent to another school?

Current students can request an official transcript through MyRED by hovering over the Academics tab and choosing Order Official Transcript. Additional information can be found on the Ordering Transcripts webpage.

Internships & Study Abroad

Do I need an internship?

Only International Business Majors and Sports Management & Business minors are required to complete an internship for their degree. However, all students are encouraged to pursue an internship. These valuable opportunities can provide a student with experience in their future career choice and enhance their likelihood for employment.

How do I find an internship/on-campus job?

Handshake is a common way to locate internships and on-campus jobs. There are also other avenues for finding opportunities. Talk to the Business Career Center to learn more.

Can I get credit for my internship?

Possibly. College of Business students may qualify to earn BSAD 395: Professional Internship credit for 0-3 credits. Talk with an advisor to determine if this credit would be beneficial for your degree and learn the process to request the credit. Additional information about internship credit can be found on the Internship Credit webpage.

I want to study abroad. How do I get started?

Check out the Global Experiences Office (GEO) webpage for steps to get started, including researching program options of interest. You can meet with the GEO coordinator for the CoB for additional guidance in the study abroad planning process. As part of the process, you will eventually meet with an advisor to discuss study abroad courses of interest, how they may work toward degree requirements, and potentially submit pre-departure course evaluations.

Graduation, Honors & Scholarship

How do I know if I’m set to graduate this semester?

There are several steps in the process to being cleared for graduation. The main two are 1) Applying for graduation in MyRED at the beginning of your final semester (to indicate intent to graduate pending completed requirements), and 2) verifying all degree requirements  are showing as in progress or complete on the official tab of your Degree Audit. Verify all intended majors and minors are also appearing on the Degree Audit. If any requirement appears unaccounted for, please connect with an advisor as soon as possible to identify the issue.

When/How do I apply for graduation?

A student applies for graduation at the beginning of their last semester at UNL. The application is available in MyRED > Academics tab. Business students must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA in order to apply. For more information on graduation, visit the Graduation Application webpage.=

What is the Dean’s List?

The Dean’s List is an academic honor awarded by the College to recognize students who demonstrated academic excellence in a given semester.

How do I know if I made the Dean’s List?

You will be notified by email. Students must complete 12 or more graded credit hours for that semester (P/NP hours do not apply) and earn a minimum of 3.6 GPA for the semester. Dean's List recipients are published on the College of Business Undergraduate Dean's List webpage.

Why doesn't my name appear on the Dean's List?

If you've verified that you made the Dean's List and your name doesn't appear, you likely selected to restrict your information to outside sources, so no information about you can be disclosed. This includes honors you receive while attending UNL.

Will I graduate with Distinction?

To be eligible for distinction, a student must complete 42 graded credit hours (excluding P/NP) at UNL prior to the semester they graduate and must have completed 57 such credit hours at the time they graduate. Highest Distinction is assigned to candidates with a 3.9 cumulative GPA or above, High Distinction is assigned to candidates with a 3.8 cumulative GPA or above, and Distinction is assigned to candidates with a 3.7 cumulative GPA or above. Distinction is determined based on the cumulative GPA prior to the semester of graduation. Students who are awarded the honor of distinction are notified in the final semester of their studies. This information is also available on the CoB Degrees with Distinction webpage.

How do I apply for scholarships?

College of Business scholarships are available for current students and are awarded based on scholarship and donor specifications, including student financial need, academic performance, major, and class standing, among other factors. To be considered for financial need criteria, students need to have completed a current FAFSA. The Current Student Scholarship application opens in early October in MyRED > Financial Aid. They are due by February 1st. Contact Husker Hub for assistance exploring other scholarship opportunities. Visit our Current Student Scholarships webpage for more information.
