College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

  • Jimmy Downes, associate professor of accountancy, leads the School of Accountancy as its director this fall, and Eric Thompson, K.H. Nelson College Professor of Economics and director of Bureau of Business Research, chairs the Department of Economics. Read the College of Business story.
  • Jennifer Ryan, department chair and professor of supply chain management and analytics and Van Horne Family Endowed Chair, shared with the Grow Lincoln radio show how the pandemic affected the supply chain and whether it affected how professors teach and research supply chain management and analytics. Listen to the August 13 episode.
  • Julie Wu, associate professor of finance, recently had the article titled "Standing out from the crowd via CSR engagement: Evidence from non-fundamental-driven price pressure" accepted for publication in the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, a leading finance journal. She and her co-authors test the signaling view of corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagement using two complementary quasi-natural experiments that impose non-fundamental-driven negative pressure on stock prices. They find that firms under negative stock price pressure increase CSR activities compared to otherwise similar firms. Firms under such price pressure improve CSR strengths, including costly environmental investments. CSR engagement attracts socially responsible investors and lowers the cost of capital for signaling firms.
  • Four business faculty were named Nebraska Governance and Technology Center Faculty Fellows for the 2022-23 academic year. They include: Özgür Araz, Ron and Carol Cope professor of supply chain management and analytics; Tammy Beck, associate professor of management; Laura Poppo, Donald O. and Shirley Clifton Chair in Leadership and professor of management; and S. Sajeesh, Nathan J Gold Distinguished Professor of Marketing and associate professor of marketing. The program aims to develop a cohort of academics who will engage governance and technology challenges in interdisciplinary terms. Read the Nebraska Today article.
  • Two business students were selected Nebraska Governance and Technology Center (NGTC) Student Fellows. They include: Mei Fong Looi, master of actuarial science student, and Diego Villalpando, Ph.D. candidate in management. Each student fellow will join a multidisciplinary team tasked with investigating a technology-related topic of their choosing over the course of the academic year. Read the NGTC article.
  • Four business faculty will serve as faculty mentors in the university's Teaching Support Network coordinated by the Center for Transformative Teaching. They include: Amanda Gonzales, associate professor of practice in accountancy; Andrew Hanna, Seacrest Teaching Fellow and assistant professor of practice in management and entrepreneurship; Rob Simon, associate professor of practice in marketing; and Roberto Stein, Seacrest Teaching Fellow and associate professor of practice in finance. Learning + Transformation

  • The Actuarial Science Program is one of 13 programs in the world selected by the Society of Actuaries as a University-Earned Credit program. Read the College of Business story.
  • The Center for Executive and Professional Development launched the new Nonprofit Management Institute. Serving nonprofit professionals, the institute offers three executive certificate programs in management, finance and fundraising to help nonprofit leaders refine the skills they need to make a larger and lasting impact on the communities they serve.   • Nik Andrejevic, senior marketing major from Lincoln, Nebraska, and his team won the Sherwin-Williams intern project competition this summer and received a $1,000 scholarship. Twenty teams from the company's southwestern division competed.
  • Bennett Perlinger, senior management major from Paxton, Nebraska, was featured by the university for his human resources intenrship at Farmers Cooperative. Read the Nebraska Today article.

Connection + Engagement

  • Culminating efforts led by the Business Career Center, Lockin U and the Global University Central Career Union named the University of Nebraska–Lincoln as a 2022 top 50 Professional Collaboration Support - Global University award winner. Lockin U is the largest recruitment platform specializing in supporting students to find employment in China, India, Japan, Malaysia and Korea. The award honors the university's collaboration with Lockin U and the support of students pursuing opportunities abroad.
  • Five students placed in the top 10 in FBLA collegiate national competitions hosted at their 2022 National Leadership Conference in Chicago. They included: Jessica Chen, senior economics and computer science major from Lincoln, Nebraska, Website Design 1st place, Statistical Analysis 4th place and Macroeconomics 8th place; Zachary Figge, business administration major from Tustin, California, Financial Concepts 5th place and Microeconomics 10th place; Connor Nichols, sophomore computer science major and business minor from Raymond, Nebraska, Computer Concepts 2nd place, Programming Concepts 2nd place, Emerging Business Issues 4th place (with Taylor Shellenberger); Taylor Shellenberger, senior management major from Pueblo, Colorado, Emerging Business Issues 4th Place (with Connor Nichols), Business Law 6th place and Justice Administration 7th place; Tyson Shields, senior mathematics and broadcasting major from Lincoln, Administrative Support Technology 3rd place, Computer Concepts 6th place and Statistical Analysis 10th place. Kimberly Osborn, senior accounting major from Tilden, Nebraska, was recognized during the Parade of States as the Nebraska FBLA Collegiate State President.
  • The university Dance Marathon student organization earned the National Organizational Management Award at the Dance Marathon Leadership Conference in Atlanta. Business students on the executive team who accepted the award include Gabby Paskach, junior marketing major from Delano, Minnesota, and Elizabeth Kenes, junior Raikes computer science major and business minor from Orland Park, Illinois.   • Twenty-seven business majors will perform in the Cornhusker Marching Band this year. Each band member passed two auditions to gain admittance to the group. Read the Nebraska Today article.
