College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement. 

Research + Discovery 

  • Dr. Ling Harris, assistant professor of accountancy, and co-authors published the article "Recruiting Dark Personalities for Earnings Management" in the Journal of Business Ethics. Their study found certain companies deliberately hire executives with "dark personality traits" who are willing to push ethical boundaries that align with organizational objectives, particularly where it concerns earnings management.   • Dr. Alok Kumar, W.W. Marshall College Professor and associate professor of marketing, was selected as a winner of the 2020 Journal of Marketing Outstanding Reviewer Award. He was chosen by their 200-person editorial review board based on “his review workload and the constructiveness, thoroughness and timeliness of his reviews.” Read more at: https://go.unl.edu/f9jo
  • Dr. J. Kalu Osiri, director of the International Business Program and associate professor of practice in management, and co-authors' article, "Thrive and Survive: Assessing Personal Sustainability," was published in the March issue of the American Psychological Association Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research. Read the abstract: https://go.unl.edu/nj2t 
  • Dr. Brenden Timpe, assistant professor of economics, received an Early Career Research Award from the Upjohn Institute, which provides a $5,000 grant to carry out policy-relevant research on labor market issues. Timpe’s project examines parenthood and the gender earnings gap in the U.S. Learn more at: https://go.unl.edu/j5vy.  

Learning + Transformation 

  • Ten business majors earned the recognition as a Chancellor's Scholar. The highest academic award the university offers, they earned an A in every undergraduate class. Scholars include: Braelyn Isernhagen, an accounting major from Deshler, Nebraska; Ronan Jansen, an actuarial science and finance major from Rockford, Illinois; Lane Knott, an accounting major from Lincoln, Nebraska; Molly Konopik, an actuarial science major from Clive, Iowa; Kyle Krupski, a finance major from Gretna, Nebraska; Logan Lewis, an actuarial science major from Lake Villa, Illinois; Raymond Majorins, an actuarial science major from Hickman, Nebraska; Mary Morton, a management major from Lincoln; Lauren Niesen, an actuarial science major from Olathe, Kansas; Dean Ziegelman, an actuarial science and finance major from Olathe. 
  • The Center for Entrepreneurship awarded $70,000 in cash prizes to student entrepreneurs who competed in the annual New Venture Competition. Read the article: https://go.unl.edu/9uh5.
  • An interdisciplinary team of five students won the university's Global Case Competition, in which they developed a business plan for the competition's sponsor, Hauff Sports, a leading sporting goods supplier in Iowa and Nebraska. The team, which won $5,000, included: Ashley Clegg, junior Clifton Builders management and pre-med major from Lincoln; Jonathan Gerdes, sophomore civil engineering major from Lincoln; Damien Niyonshuti, sophomore integrated science major from Kigali, Rwanda; Eddie Sicila, freshman management and marketing major from Cancún, Mexico; and Sushant Timalsina, senior agricultural economics major from Kavrepalanchok, Nepal. 
  • Four business students won a total of $2,000 in scholarships in the inaugural Virtual Role-Play Competition hosted by the Center for Sales Excellence. Carlyn Bretey, a junior marketing major from Le Mars, Iowa, took first place. Read the article: https://go.unl.edu/sq0a 
  • A team of students won the Big Red Investment Club Spring 2021 Stock Pitch Competition. Students presented equities to add to the student organization's stock portfolio. The first place team included: Alex Dudash, freshman actuarial science major from Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania; Matthew McNulla, junior finance major from Aurora, Colorado; Brent Miller, senior accounting and finance major from Omaha, Nebraska; and Austin Rhamy, senior social science major from Scottsbluff, Nebraska.  
  • Students in the College of Business’ Leading People and Projects (MNGT 411) course recently awarded $5,000 grants to two nonprofits: the South of Downtown Community Development Organization and Visionary Youth.   • Samantha Gates, junior economics major from Lincoln, and Stephanie Herridge, junior actuarial science major from Lincoln, received Dean’s Coins from Dean Kathy Farrell on March 23 for going above and beyond in their educational experience, challenging themselves to participate in the inaugural State Farm Business with Integrity Case Competition, then taking initiative to share about their experience with Farrell at her weekly Dean’s Office Hours. 

Connection + Engagement

  • Devan Buescher, senior international business and Clifton Builders management major from Lincoln; Connor Castleman, senior Clifton Builders management major from Omaha; Tyler Clark, senior Clifton Builders management major from Omaha; Mary O'Keeffe, senior Clifton Builders management major from Hastings, Nebraska; and Grace Partridge, junior Clifton Builders management major from Rapid City, South Dakota, received awards at the 2021 Clifton Strengths Institute (CSI) Recognition Ceremony. O'Keeffe received the prestigious Mark Pogue Award, honoring the former CSI executive director. The Outstanding Builder Award presented to Castleman and Clark honors students in the Clifton Builder Program who take on challenges to create change when others may back away. Buescher and Partridge earned the Outstanding Coaches Award for exceeding expectations in their work to advance strengths. 
  • Four students earned their Employment Readiness Certificates including: Mohsin Ambusaidi, junior business administration major from Nizwa, Oman; Salim Bait Said, senior management major from Muscat, Oman; Almoatasim Husain Ali Al Hasani, junior finance major from Muscat, Oman; and Mohammed Sami Al Hasni, senior supply chain management major from As-seeb, Oman. Designed to help international students studying business to discover and develop skills to seek internship and job opportunities, the ERC program includes career development workshops, coaching appointments, group service projects and success skills development.  
  • Harley Edic, a junior accounting major from Lincoln, was recognized as the Student of the Month by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. Edic serves as an accounting tutor in the Teaching and Learning Center and a research assistant to a professor in the School of Accountancy. She is involved in Beta Alpha Psi and Delta Sigma Pi and participated in the Deloitte Audit Innovation Campus Challenge. 
  • Dr. Kathy Farrell, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of the College of Business, served on the panel, "Building a Sense of Community Online," at the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International Conference and Annual Meeting. She and other business school leaders discussed how their schools engaged students in a virtual setting, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. 
  • Jessica Ha, a senior international business major from Lincoln, received the Outstanding Honors Graduate Award. The University Honors Program selected exceptional graduates from each college based on their contributions to the Honors community and participation in Honors experiences. 
  • Dr. Chris Timm, director of the Business Career Center, talked about how businesses get interns for their company on the April 10 episode of Grow Lincoln on 1400 KLIN. Listen at: https://go.unl.edu/dot2
