Achievements for January 2023
College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

  • Edward Balistreri, Duane Acklie Chair and professor of economics, co-authored "The Impact of COVID-19 and Associated Policy Responses on Global Food Security" published in Agricultural Economics. This research considers the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated government policies on the global trading system and its ability to deliver food to impoverished people in 80 countries.   • Balistreri received a nearly $40,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture and University of Wisconsin for a project titled Strategic Program Grant for Calculation of State-Level Input-Output Tables.
  • Alok Kumar, Steve & Jennifer David Chair in Business and professor of marketing, and Amit Saini, department chair and W. W. Marshall College Professor and professor of marketing, had their article, “Impact of Buying Groups on Buyer-Supplier Relationships: Group-Dyad Interactions in Business-to-Business Markets,” accepted for publication in the Journal of Marketing Research. The article was also co-written by Ph.D. alumna Jennifer Skiba, '16. 
  • Jenna Pieper, Donald and Shirley Clifton Chair of Organizational Behavior and associate professor of management, co-authored "Collective Turnover Response Over Time to a Unit-Level Shock" published in the Journal of Applied Psychology. This work examines how a shock that affects an entire unit influences the pattern of collective turnover. Learn more about the research.
  • Plavini Punyatoya, Ph.D. student in marketing, had her proposal titled “Effective Time Management In Sales: When An Hour Is More Than Sixty Minutes” selected as the winner of the University Sales Center Alliance 2022 Research Grant Program. This proposal is based on her second-year paper. The national competition's other winner was Nebraska marketing Ph.D. lum Avinash Malshe, '05, who is a professor of marketing at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis.
  • Blake Runnalls, assistant professor of marketing, provided insight in a Balto blog post about how inflation is impacting sales agents' phone conversations with consumers. He shared how he teaches students to approach cost objections in the business-to-business space. Read the blog post.
  • Eight business majors were among 26 honors students who presented their deterrence research to a panel of U.S. Strategic Command officials at StratCom headquarters at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue. The student groups covered topics ranging from the Russia-Ukraine crisis to Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO. Business students included: Brandon Collins, economics major from Omaha, Nebraska; Logan Connealy, accounting major from Omaha; Andrea Curnes, supply chain management major from Lenexa, Kansas; Madison Giacomo, marketing major from Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Jacob Hansen, accounting and finance major from Lone Tree, Colorado; Audrey Kreun, accounting major from Hull, Iowa; Joel Myers, economics major from Omaha; and Kaleb Strawhecker, economics and pre-law major from Kearney, Nebraska. Learning + Transformation

  • Cohan Bonow, ’22, management graduate with human resources management option, of Windsor, Colorado, received his officer commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. Read the Nebraska Today article.
  • Paige Palmer, '22, an actuarial science graduate from Oxford, Michigan, earned recognition as a Chancellor's Scholar. The highest academic award the university offers goes to graduating seniors who earned an A in every undergraduate class. Read the Nebraska Today article.
  • Haley Szymczak, an accounting major from Bartlett, Illinois, shared her experience participating in the Deloitte Future of Work Institute in a Dec. 20 Fast Company article. Szymczak and eight other Nebraska Business Honors Academy students further developed critical human skills such as empathy, emotional intelligence, adaptability and critical thinking.   • Twelve business majors graduated in December having completed the requirements of the University Honors Program. Read the Nebraska Today article.
  • A six-member team of accounting majors representing Nebraska in Deloitte's Audit Innovation Campus Challenge placed in the top 12 out of 55 schools competing in the national competition. The team will compete in the final round of the competition in April. Members included: Cole Frye, accounting major from Ashland, Nebraska; Alex Nguyen, accounting major from Lincoln, Nebraska; Alvan Tran, accounting and finance major from Lincoln; Morgan Wallinger, accounting and agribusiness major from Stuart, Nebraska; and Bruno Weiss-Salles, accounting and finance major from Porto Alegre, Brazil.
  • A team of students won the Big Red Investment Club Stock Pitch Competition. Students presented equities to add to the student organization's stock portfolio. The first-place team included: Griffin Brown, finance major from Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Jack Bunter, finance major from Eagle River, Wisconsin; Nick Coffey, accounting and finance major from Lincoln; Landen Fogle, computer science major from Omaha; Daniel Hill, accounting major from Chicago; Max Vitek mathematics major from Omaha; and Minh Vu, economics major from Lincoln. 

Connection + Engagement

  • Seven business majors were selected as New Student Enrollment leaders for 2023-24. They will participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of summer enrollment, transfer orientation, Big Ten Welcome, Husker Dialogues and other activities during the year. NSE leaders include: Dylan Anderson, management major from Omaha; Carlie Davis, management major from Sandy, Utah; Tenley Katt, finance major from Lincoln; Chase Kavanaugh, accounting major from Lincoln; Sam Pribyl, supply chain management major from Papillion, Nebraska; Andrew Stubblefield, management major from Newbury Park, California; and Jordan Westenbroek, management major from Frederick, Colorado.
  • Mya Bunker, '22, finance graduate from Brandon, South Dakota, received a Dean's Coin from Rachel Larson, assistant dean of academic and career development, for going above and beyond as a student ambassador for the College of Business during her college career. She reached out to hundreds of out-of-state students, advocated for the finance major and took on many additional tasks not required in her role.
  • Edgar Montoya, '21, and Mikki Sandin, assistant director of professional & life skills, were elected as inaugural senators to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Staff Senate. The new governance body will provide a voice for staff employees. Read the Nebraska Today article.
