College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

  • Alok Kumar, Steve & Jennifer David Chair in Business and professor of marketing, and his co-authors of the 2014 Journal of Marketing article, "Customer Orientation Structure for Internet-Based Business-to-Business Platform Firms”, received the 2022 Louis W. Stern Award. The Interorganizational Special Interest Group (IOSIG) of the American Marketing Association's Stern Award recognizes an outstanding article published in a widely recognized and highly respected refereed journal that has made a significant contribution to the literature on marketing and channels of distribution between three and eight calendar years after publication.
  • Ann Mari May, professor emeritus of economics, published the book, "Gender and the Dismal Science." The book explores the role of women during the formative years of American economics and sheds new light on why certain biases against women persist.   • Erkut Sönmez, associate professor of supply chain management and analytics, was interviewed for a June 30 Politico article on the cost of meat, eggs and other edible items at the grocery store driving historic inflation. Read the story.
  • Scott Swenseth, faculty director of Business Graduate Programs and associate professor of supply chain management and analytics, was interviewed for a July 19 KETV story on contract negotiations for the nation’s rail workers. Swenseth said the stakes are high in Nebraska and across the United States. “Any additional disruption that we’re going to have with supply chains, it’s going to have a significant impact,” he said.   • Eric Thompson, department chair, K.H. Nelson College Professor of Economics and director of Bureau of Business Research, was interviewed for a July 26 KLIN story on the Federal Reserve preparing to raise interest rates in an attempt to curb inflation. Read the story.
  • Brenden Timpe, assistant professor of economics, received a grant from the Office of Research and Economic Development Layman Awards program, which funds work that enhances a researcher’s ability to obtain external funding to support prominent scholarship. One of 27 projects at the university selected, Timpe's proposal is titled "Parenthood and the Gender Earnings Gap in the United States."

Learning + Transformation

  • Nearly 100 Huskers studied abroad in College of Business programs this summer. Students traveled to four countries, including England, Italy, Rwanda and Spain, gaining business insight from other cultures. Read the College of Business story.
  • Pyper Haarala, senior finance and actuarial science major from Omaha, Nebraska, talked about her internship with the Actuarial Development Program for Lincoln Financial in a July 28 article on MarketScreener. Read the article.
  • Naren Narasimhan, a senior marketing major from Omaha, Nebraska, talks about his internship experience at Ameritas in a June 23 KLKN story. Read the article.
  • Scott Swenseth, faculty director of Business Graduate Programs and associate professor of supply chain management and analytics, developed a case competition for students attending the national Specialty Tools & Fasteners Distributors Association (STAFDA) Convention and Trade Show in San Diego, Oct. 30-Nov. 1. Connection + Engagement

  • The Business Career Center hosted Employer Partners Day on August 3. Humanex Ventures won the 2022 Employer of the Year award, which honors an organization who has gone above and beyond to collaborate with the Business Career Center in their commitment to students’ career development at the College of Business. Kathryn Maresh, assistant professor of practice in accountancy, was named the Sue Vagts Faculty/Staff Partner of the Year. The center recognized Maresh for building relationships with employers and enhancing career development, education, and opportunities to help College of Business students succeed.
  • Nearly 150 children and grandchildren of University of Nebraska–Lincoln alumni attended Future Husker University hosted by the Nebraska Alumni Association. Some of the first- to eighth-graders spent their time with College of Business faculty like Jill Trucke, associate professor of practice in accountancy. Read the story.
  • Rob Khorram, junior finance major from Elkhorn, Nebraska, and Zach Molzer, senior Clifton Builders management major from Leawood, Kansas, and Husker student-athlete Elliott Brown, junior business administration major from Omaha, Nebraska, have launched a new name, image and likeness group called Big Red Fan Club, KLKN and the Omaha World-Herald reported. Twenty-four Husker student-athletes are already part of the group, a player-led entity that allows them to control what they contribute and when they are available. Read the story.
  • Two College of Business students participated in the Nebraska Community Foundation Hometown Intern program, which aims to boost community economic development and retention of future community leaders. Emmie Dvorak, sophomore business administration major from Dodge, Nebraska, helped businesses and individuals in her community map assets and discover their dreams. Logan Wiedel, junior finance major from Hebron, Nebraska, worked on marketing projects, surveys, asset mapping and event planning for a countywide fundraiser. Read or watch the 1011 story.
