Four Steps to Career Fair Success

Ag Employers Join With Business Employers at University Career Fair
Four Steps to Career Fair Success
One big change for the fall career fair is combining traditional business employers with agricultural sciences and natural resource recruiters.
Business students looking to bolster their future careers can take practical action steps to achieve their dreams leading up to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Career Fair, Tuesday, September 24, 1-5 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Whether a freshman, senior or anywhere in between, it is never too early to prepare according to Dr. Rachel Larson, director of the Business Career Center.

“Even if a student is not currently looking for a job it’s important to both attend and take advantage of opportunities leading up to the University Career Fair,” said Larson. “When you get to that point where you are looking for an internship or job, having that experience makes you less nervous and more prepared for what to expect.”

Larson emphasized using every resource available to gain insights into what employers look for from aspiring applicants. Four resources available to business students include:
  • Résumé Review
The Business Career Center offers a comprehensive résumé review to assure students are putting their best foot forward when presenting themselves on paper to employers. Students should call the office at 402-472-7272 or make an appointment through MyPlan with a career coach in HLH 141 prior to the University Career Fair to be confident their résumés capture their experience and abilities in the best light possible. Drop-in appointments are also available most afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m.
  • Career Closet
Students seeking professional dress attire when attending the University Career Fair can visit the Career Closet in HLH 123 G. The Career Closet provides up to three gently used professional dress items at no cost to College of Business majors who present their student ID on their visit. Career Closet hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Husker Suit-Up
On Sunday, September 15, Husker Suit-Up sponsored through University Career Services happens at Gateway Mall’s JCPenney Store. The event allows any Nebraska student to purchase professional clothing with discounts up to 60 percent off between 6:30-9:30 p.m.
  • #HIREME
Students can attend #HIREME, an event where they can meet employers and career coaches to learn tips, tricks and best practices on career fair related topics. The session is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18, 6-7:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union.
Students will also be connecting with a more diverse employer base at this fall’s University Career Fair. Larson pointed out the change for the fall career fair is combining traditional business employers with agricultural sciences and natural resource recruiters. She hopes the change will broaden student perspectives on career possibilities.

“Business students who have interest in the agricultural industry are going to get more access to those employers all in one day. They will learn about additional opportunities of business in fields such as banking. For instance, a lot of banks do farmland valuation to assess loans. There’s also sales opportunities with companies whether it’s seed, chemicals or farm implements,” said Larson.
