Beta Alpha Psi members
Beta Alpha Psi members were finalists at the organization's mid-year convention and will move on to the national competition next month.

Derek Branch was selected by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board as a Student of the Month.

CornhuskerVentureCapital
The Husker Venture Fund student organization created and executed their inaugural Cornhusker Venture Capital Competition for teams from five Midwestern universities.
Research and Publications
  • A study by the Bureau of Business Research, housed in the College of Business, shows the success of business innovation programs in strengthening entrepreneurship and supporting job creation. Read about the research.
  • The Nebraska Council on Economic Education partnered with the Nebraska Commission on Problem Gambling and Federal Reserve of St. Louis to create a gambling curriculum for high school students called "Beyond The Bet: The Economics of Gambling," which is designed to help teens understand gambling through the lenses of personal finance and economics. It uses engaging activities and real-world connections to help them apply complex concepts like risk, incentives and opportunity cost. Read the St. Louis Fed article about the curriculum.
Notable Involvement
  • Derek Branch, senior Clifton Builders management major from Lincoln, Nebraska, was selected by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board as a Student of the Month. See the College of Business Facebook post.
  • Grace Schaefer, junior supply chain management major from Papillion, Nebraska, was selected by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board as a Student of the Month. See the College of Business Facebook post.
  • Four business students and Chris Timm, director of the Business Career Center, of the College of Business Career Center participated in the Forté Foundation's Fast Track to Finance Conference in New York City in February. The conference, designed to support women pursuing finance careers, provided students with access to top industry professionals, networking events and a career expo.   • Twelve finance majors traveled to New York City in January to network with industry leaders from 13 of the world's most respected investment banks and asset management firms. The opportunity was made possible by Matt and Natasha Plooster of Bridgepoint Investment Banking. Read about the students and their trip.
Competitions
  • Members of the Collegiate DECA student organization at UNL earned top honors at the Minnesota Collegiate DECA State Career Development Conference held in Alexandria, Minnesota, in February. Winning team members included: Nick Loriaux, sophomore finance major from Lincoln, Nebraska, first place in Entrepreneurship Operations; Jacob Hyder, sophomore management and marketing major from Omaha, Nebraska, first place in marketing management; and Britney Le, junior marketing major from Lincoln, second place in fashion merchandising and marketing.
  • Three teams of Huskers were among the top teams at the Beta Alpha Psi mid-year meeting Best Practices competition in February in Dallas. All three teams will advance to the annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, in August. The teams that competed against 11 universities included: "Impacting Your Profession," third place: Trinity Hansen, senior accounting major from Stapleton, Nebraska; Josh Hall, senior accounting major from Lincoln; and Andrew Bell, senior accounting major from Aurora, Nebraska. "Impacting Community Service," third place: Zoey Aldrich, junior accounting and management major from Cairo, Nebraska; Courtney Cummings, junior accounting major from Kansas City, Missouri; Samantha Larson, junior accounting major from Olympia, Washington; and Ruby Lenzen, senior accounting major from Burnsville, Minnesota; and "Impacting Inclusiveness," second place: Alex Nguyen, senior accounting major from Lincoln; Jared Loos, junior accounting and finance major from Lawrence, Kansas; and Derek Huss, senior accounting major from Spencer, Iowa. 
  • Four Nebraska Business Honors Academy students competed in the McCombs National Women's Case Competition in February at The University of Texas and earned second place out of 27 universities. Team members were: Sydney Beck, junior marketing and Clifton Builders management major from Fairway, Kansas; Amber Hanson, senior economics and finance major from Temecula, California; Karyssa Johnson, sophomore economics and finance major from Omaha, Nebraska; and Grace Schaefer, junior supply chain management major from Papillion, Nebraska.
  • The Husker Venture Fund hosted the inaugural Cornhusker Venture Capital Competition at the College of Business. Five teams from Midwestern universities competed in this student-led competition, evaluating real startups and making mock investment decisions judged by industry professionals.   • The 48-Hour Challenge hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship saw students from across campus team up to develop early-stage ideas with customer insights, receive mentorship from coaches and pitch their business plans after 48 hours. Winners included College of Business majors: first place: Rio Surf, founder Bernardo Lopes, freshman economics major from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and Simon Schumacher, management major from Lincoln; second place: Safeguard Solutions, Emanuela Casadei, senior management and marketing major from Cesena, Italy. Social media challenge: Allie Boell, senior management major from Fremont, Nebraska; Yamen Seanwan, senior business administration major from Lincoln; and Casadei.

  • Rob Simon, associate professor of practice in marketing, was interviewed for a 10/11 news segment in Lincoln, Nebraska, in February about Super Bowl advertising trends. See the 1011 video.
  • Eric Thompson, department chair, K.H. Nelson College Professor of Economics and director of Bureau of Business Research, appeared on Grow Lincoln radio show in Lincoln to talk about Nebraska businesses' hiring outlook as well as upcoming surveys of employers about the workforce.   • Lindsay Tillinghast, director of Lincoln Center for Economic Education, director of Nebraska Business at Standing Bear and lecturer of economics, was featured in WalletHub's piece about Credit Card Information. Read her contribution to the article.
  • Jennifer Davidson, associate professor of practice in economics, Nebraska Council on Economic Education president and Nebraska Bankers Association Faculty Fellow, spoke to 10/11 News in a monthly money segment about watching out for fraud in February. See the 10/11 interview.
