Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

• The Nebraska School of Accountancy tax team won the national Deloitte FanTAXTic Business Case Competition in January. The team included Trinity Hansen, junior accounting major from Stapleton, Nebraska; Ethan Heinemann, junior accounting major from Bennington, Nebraska; Ava Hollingsworth, sophomore accounting, finance and computer science major from Omaha, Nebraska; William Wooden, sophomore accounting major from Kansas City, Missouri; and Ethan Twesme, sophomore accounting and finance major from Monument, Colorado. Their advisor is Kathryn Maresh, assistant professor of practice in accountancy. The students each receive $2,000 and the School of Accountancy receives $10,000 from Deloitte for the accomplishment.
• Husker Venture Fund students traveled to Boston to compete in the national Venture Capital Investment Competition in January, where they won the Entrepreneur’s Choice award. The team included Reese Munson, senior economics major from Omaha, Nebraska; William Manhart, senior finance major; Colby Marsden senior finance major from Stilwell, Kansas; Gretchen Holland, sophomore accounting and finance major from Bloomington, Minnesota; Will Anderson, senior business minor from Crystal Lake, Illinois; and Amir Tarkian, sophomore business minor from Lincoln, Nebraska.

  

• Wesley Boyce, assistant professor of practice in supply chain management and analytics and program director of master of science in supply chain management, was interviewed for a Jan. 15 Straight Arrow News story on the possible economic impact of recent Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. Boyce said continued disruption of these shipping lanes could cause a delayed ripple effect for American consumers.
• Jennifer Davidson, associate professor of practice in economics, Nebraska Council on Economic Education president and Nebraska Bankers Association Faculty Fellow, was featured in WalletHub's piece about the benefits and best practices of using Prepaid Cards. Read the article.

Learning + Transformation

• 1,272 students were named to the College of Business Dean's List for the fall 2023 semester, with a minimum GPA of 3.6. Read the article and list of names.
• Lindsay Rickers, junior marketing major from Waverly, Nebraska, was featured by Newschannel Nebraska for her work as a student strengths coach in the College of Business. See the video.
• Morgan Wallinger, a Master of Professional Accountancy student and '23 accounting graduate from Stuart, Nebraska, was featured in the Future of Nebraska series by NewsChannel Nebraska. See the video.
• Isaac Perez, a management and data science major from Lexington, Nebraska, was featured in the Future of Nebraska series by NewsChannel Nebraska. See the video.

Connection + Engagement

• Lindsay Tillinghast, director of Lincoln Center for Economic Education, director of Nebraska Business at Standing Bear and lecturer of economics, was featured in a Lincoln Public Schools article about the Nebraska Stock Market Game middle and high school students competed in. Read the article.
• Students selected to attend the 2024 U.S. Naval Academy Leadership Conference in Annapolis, Maryland, on Jan. 21-24 included Deric Goldenstein, economics major from Kenesaw, Nebraska; Nikolas Mainieri Mancio, finance and accounting major from Brazil; Avery Plessel, marketing major from Beatrice, Nebraska; and Grace Timm, agribusiness major and Clifton Builder management major from Chappell, Nebraska.
• Three College of Business faculty received the 2024 Friends and Family Award, which honors outstanding faculty and staff who have made a significant difference in students' lives. To receive this award, students told their family/friends about the faculty or staff member, and their family/friends made the nomination, making this a very special award encouraging good student and faculty/staff relationships. College of Business faculty receiving the award, and the number of years they have received this award: Timothy Hodges, executive director of the Clifton Strengths Institute and assistant professor of practice in management, (3); Elina Ibrayeva, associate professor of practice in management, (4); Amit Saini, W. W. Marshall College Professor and professor of marketing, (4).
• Freshman economics major Kaden Boyer of Bismarck, North Dakota, was among the volunteers at the Center for People in Need food distribution during Martin Luther King Jr. Week events at the university. He was interviewed about his experience by local news station KLKN-TV. See the video.
• The Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship prepared the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's teams for the Governor's New Venture Competition. Eight of the 11 finalist teams and the top three winners were all UNL students, including finance major Seth Daup, a junior from Gothenburg, Nebraska, and business minors Bridget Peterkin and Tristan Curd, both from Omaha. The three winning teams were:
  • 1st place: $20,000 - Samuel Ingledue and Tan Phan for Privy AI
  • 2nd place: $15,000 - Daup and Brooke Bode for Cattle Kettle
  • 3rd place: $10,000 - Peterkin and Curd for Dyslexico. Read the Journal Star article.
