Craft Your Elevator Pitch

What is an Elevator Pitch?

An elevator pitch is a brief way to introduce  yourself and make a potential connection. It is important to have an elevator pitch practiced so you can use it when the time occurs.

Begin by writing down what you want the other person to know about you. Keep it professional - consider skills and experiences that make you unique modify your pitch for different situations.

Helpful Tips for Delivering Your Elevator Pitch
  • Write out your pitch and keep it short (less than 45 seconds). Practice, but do not memorize it.
  • Avoid repeating information on your resume.
  • Throughout the conversation, be an active participant, listen and respond appropriately. Ask questions to keep the conversation going, such as:
    • What skills and experiences do you recommend I seek out if I would like to enter this field?
    • What type of positions do most people in this industry start with?
    • May I contact you if I have any additional questions?
  • Thank them for their time and ask how to follow-up.
What do you need others to know about you? What do you need to communicate? What career/industry interests you? What are you good at?
