College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

  • Jennifer Davidson, associate professor of practice in economics, Nebraska Council on Economic Education president and Nebraska Bankers Association Faculty Fellow, was featured in WalletHub's Ask the Experts where she gave insight into how car insurance companies set their premiums.   • Jonathan O'Brien, was selected as one of five faculty to represent Nebraska as a faculty fellow in the Department Executive Officers Program offered by the Big Ten Academic Alliance. Read the Nebraska Today article.
  • Thomas Omer, Delmar Lienemann Sr. Chair in Accountancy and professor emeritus of accountancy, joined an elite group of academics who published in all six top accounting journals. He accomplished the feat with all six papers being co-authored with his former Ph.D. students. Read the College of Business story.
  • Eric Thompson, department chair, K.H. Nelson College Professor of Economics and director of Bureau of Business Research, was interviewed for an Oct. 19 KHGI/KFXL/KPTM story on the 2022 harvest. He said Nebraska looks to fare well, with the state ranking third behind California and Iowa for the value commodities are bringing in. Read the article.
  • Jennifer Ryan, department chair and professor of supply chain management and analytics and Van Horne Family Endowed Chair, was interviewed for a Sept. 29 KLKN story on how Hurricane Ian might affect the supply chain. She said any disruption can reverberate throughout the economy because producers use components from different companies for products. Watch or read the transcript of the TV segment.
  • Rob Simon, associate professor of practice in marketing, was featured in WalletHub's Ask the Experts where he discussed how car insurance companies market to consumers. Read the WalletHub article.

Learning + Transformation

  • The Inclusive Business Leaders program won the 2022 Best of CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) District VI Award for the category of Leadership: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives. It was selected based on the program's "clear goals, specific strategies and demonstrable outcomes." District VI includes members in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
  • Four business majors won first place in the national case competition held at the Specialty Tool and Fastener Distributor Association (STAFDA) Conference in San Diego. Team members included: Malik Al-Waail, a supply chain management major from Sohar, Oman; Vivian Bui, a supply chain management major from Bien Hoa, Vietnam; Isaac Ruzicka, a business administration major from Grand Island, Nebraska; and Hannah Walker, a supply chain management major from Parkville, Missouri.
  • Thirty-one first-year business students began the Inclusive Business Leaders program. They will learn how to lead and champion diversity and inclusion while being supported in their career goals with tailored networking and mentorship opportunities. Read the College of Business story.
  • Richard DeFusco, department chair and professor of finance, was recognized with a tribute scholarship in his name by the Department of Finance Advisory Board. Read the College of Business story.
  • Kylie Gall, senior marketing major from Norfolk, Nebraska, received the Center for Sales Excellence High Achievers Scholarship. Established by Ryan Shoemaker, '17, the scholarship honors one student in Advanced Professional Selling (MRKT 357) who sells $5,000 or more in sponsorships.   • Zachary Wallenberg, an accounting major, and Nicholas Wallenberg, a computer science major, were selected for the invite-only 2022 Alexis Elliott Memorial Round Robin for the Lincoln-Douglas debate. The competition features the most decorated Lincoln-Douglas debate students from the previous season. The brothers helped the debate team win the national championship earlier this year. Both advanced to the quarterfinal round and finished with a combined record of 13-5. Zachary, a first-year student, was named the tournament’s third overall speaker, and Nick, a junior, was named the ninth overall speaker.

Connection + Engagement

  • Barron H. Harvey, ’74, ’75 & ’77, and Audrey Went, ’82, were inducted into the School of Accountancy Hall of Fame. Their induction honors their professional success and commitment to the school. Read the College of Business story.
  • Forty-four successful entrepreneurs were named inaugural Entrepreneurship Fellows. As part of the Center for Entrepreneurship program, they will mentor students, judge entrepreneurship competitions, speak in class and more. Read the College of Business story.
  • Ten business alumni joined the university's Young Alumni Academy, which is coordinated by the Nebraska Alumni Association. Read the College of Business story.
  • Maria Heyen, senior international business and Clifton Builders management major from Astoria, Oregon, was selected as the Student of the Month by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. She serves as a managing director of the Husker Venture Fund and helped the organization grow more inclusive and recruit more diverse candidates. Heyen also is a Clifton Builder, a student strengths coach and member of Pride in Business, StartupsUNL and Delta Sigma Pi.
  • Lindsay Rickers, sophomore marketing and Clifton Builder management major from Waverly, Nebraska, was honored as the Student of the Month by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. Rickers served in various volunteer roles around the university including Delta Sigma Pi (DSP), the Career Closet and Dance Marathon fundraiser. She is the faculty and alumni relations vice president for DSP, a student strengths coach and email marketing intern at Hudl. Over the past year, Rickers battled health issues that forced her to scale back many involvements, but still made it onto the spring Dean's List for her academic achievement.
  • Brian Baugh, associate professor of finance, received a Dean's Coin for going above and beyond to help the university. He served on a system-wide committee that evaluated and developed the revised retirement plan, then assisted faculty and staff in their understanding of the changes.
  • Kendra Ritchie, director of recruitment, and Sheri Irwin-Gish, executive director of Communications, Marketing and External Relations, received Dean's Coins for going above and beyond to assist the college in connecting to future graduate students.
  • Mikki Sandin, assistant director of professional & life skills, and Tyrell Ross, director of finance, budget & HR, received Dean's Coins for their service on the college's Inclusive Excellence Advisory Board.
