Achievements for June 2020
College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation, and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

  • Ravi Agarwal, a Ph.D. student in marketing, received the Department of Marketing Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Graduate Student. Selected by marketing faculty, the award considers teaching evaluations, course structure and overall contributions to students.
  • Dr. Thomas Dotzel, assistant professor of marketing, was honored with the Department of Marketing Research Award. This award recognizes significant achievements in research through publications in journals and research presentations at national and international conferences. His recent research published in the Journal of Marketing.
  • Dr. Jenna Pieper, associate professor of management, was elected to the Human Resources Division Executive Committee within the Academy of Management. The committee leads the HR Division, which is dedicated to improving HR practices, encouraging personal growth and development, and enhancing individual performance and well-being.
  • Dr. Amit Saini, associate professor of marketing and W.W. Marshall College Professor, was honored with the Department of Marketing Research Award. This award recognizes significant achievements in research through publications in journals and research presentations at national and international conferences. His recent research published in the Journal of Marketing and Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management. He also had another manuscript accepted for publication in the Journal of Business Ethics.
  • Shilpa Somraj, a Ph.D. student in marketing, received the Department of Marketing Award for Excellence in Research by a Graduate Student. Criteria for this award include the number of publications in journals and research presentations at national and international conferences.
  • Dr. Eric Thompson, Nelson Professor of Economics and director of the Bureau of Business Research, was featured in multiple stories about a new three-year forecast from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Bureau of Business Research and the Nebraska Business Forecast Council. Nebraska’s economy should recover rapidly from the COVID-19 pandemic, but economic activity will drop for 2020 as a whole, according to the forecast. Stories on the forecast have appeared in The Grand Island IndependentKearney Hub, KLKN, Lincoln Journal Star, NET News, Norfolk Daily News and Omaha World-Herald.   • Thompson was also interviewed for a May 12 CNN.com article on why unemployment claims have been so low in Nebraska, South Dakota and Utah, relative to other states. Primary industries in Nebraska include a large rail and trucking sector; farm equipment manufacturing; insurance; and finance. "These are necessities that obviously are needed throughout the business cycle," Thompson said. Read more at: https://go.unl.edu/meid.
  • Dr. Varkey Titus Jr., assistant professor of management, was promoted to associate professor and granted tenure. His expertise is in corporate entrepreneurship and venturing, entrepreneurship and strategic management. Titus’s research has been published in several top peer-reviewed academic journals, such as Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal and Journal of Management.
  • The College of Business honored three with research awards: Dr. Tom Omer, professor of accountancy and Delmar Lienemann Sr. Chair of Accounting, Distinguished Research Award; Dr. Danny Tannenbaum, assistant professor of economics, Emerging Scholar Research Award; and Reha Karadag, Ph.D. student in management, Ph.D. Student Research Award. Learning + Transformation

  • Chad Mardesen, assistant professor of practice in marketing, received the Department of Marketing Faculty Teaching Award. The Faculty Teaching Award honors someone with outstanding teaching evaluations, course structure and contributions to students. His nominators noted he developed and taught several sales classes, took students to national sales competitions and received excellent teaching evaluations from students.
  • Dr. Jamie Hyodo, assistant professor of marketing, received the Department of Marketing Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Award. The awardee is selected by doctoral students in marketing.
  • Matthew Ringler, a junior actuarial science major minoring in law and business, finance and math, was recognized as the Student of the Year by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board.
  • Four Nebraska Business Honors Academy students earned their academy blackshirts. The recipients received their blackshirt by embodying one or more of the five College of Business guiding principles and their commitment to the academy. Honorees include: Ethan Carlson, junior economics major from Norfolk, Nebraska; Grace Novak, junior marketing major from Omaha; Drew Spadaro, senior actuarial science major from Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Grayson Wegener, sophomore international business major from Lincoln.
  • Seven students earned medallions in the International Business Medallion Program. To earn bronze, silver, gold or platinum medallion status, business students pursue experiences focused on career building, global citizenship and well-being. Students who earned both silver and bronze medallions included: Kayla Brumley, a senior management and marketing major from Lee's Summit, Missouri; Devan Buescher, a sophomore Clifton Builders Management and international business major from Lincoln; Jean Claude Iradukunda, a senior integrated science major from Kigali, Rwanda; and Gloria Mwiseneza, a senior integrated science major from Kigali, Rwanda. Shama Banu Shaik, a freshman international business major from Port Blair, India, earned a silver medallion. Carolina Frias Diaz, a sophomore marketing major from Bogotá, Colombia, and Samuel Waechter-Cass, a junior economics and international business major from Hastings, Nebraska, earned bronze medallions.
  • The College of Business honored four with teaching awards: Dr. Dirk Black, assistant professor of accountancy, Distinguished Teaching Award; Dr. Uchechukwu Jarrett, associate professor of practice in economics, Excellence in Teaching Award; Dr. Roberto Stein, assistant professor of practice in finance, Distance Teaching Award; and Brian Liston-Clark, Ph.D. student in economics, Graduate Student Teaching Award. Connection + Engagement

  • Haley Hamel, MBA student and business and operations manager for the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, received the Nancy Kenny Academic Business Leader Award. The award recognizes a full-time faculty or staff member who has demonstrated exceptional collaborative leadership in academic business matters at the university.
  • Dr. Colin Ramsay, E.J. Faulkner Professor of Actuarial Science, was quoted in a June 1 Atlantic column featuring experts offering advice to recent graduates. “Do not be risk-averse,” he said. “Gather as much information as you can — then take measured and calculated risks.” Ramsay also suggested that graduates create a short-term plan (one or two years), as well as a long-term plan.   • The College of Business honored three with service awards: Rob Simon, associate professor of practice in marketing, Faculty Service Award; Deb Eisloeffel, human resources manager, Distinguished Service Award; and Jeffrey Sherrill, director of IT, Distinguished Service Award.
