University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Honors Academy students pitch their ideas during a competition in collaboration with Arbor Day Farm.

Research + Discovery
  • Dr. Demet Batur, associate professor of supply chain management and analytics, and Dr. Jennifer Ryan, department chair and Ron and Carol Cope Professor of Supply Chain Management and Analytics, and Dr. Mehmet Vuran, professor of computer science and engineering, are working to help ease internet traffic congestion during wireless rush hours. They’re studying spectrum — the range of radio frequencies along which wireless communication information travels — and working to develop technologies to assist in its usage.   • Kate Alston, junior marketing major from Omaha, Nebraska; Cameron Claborn, junior supply chain management and analytics major from Omaha; Brooks Douglass, sophomore economics and finance major from Grand Island, Nebraska; and Charles Erker, a junior finance and marketing major from Omaha, won a Nebraska Business Honors Academy competition hosted in collaboration with Arbor Day Farm. The group’s idea, titled Brilliance, featured a light festival at the tree farm, including an illuminated forest as well as other attractions.   • Dr. Eric Thompson, Nelson Professor of Economics and director of the Bureau of Business Research, was quoted in a Nov. 25 Omaha World-Herald article on Gov. Pete Ricketts joining the push for Charles Schwab to preserve TD Ameritrade operations and jobs in Omaha. Thompson said prospects are good that workers can find another job in Omaha. Learning + Transformation
  • Three students won the inaugural Husker Hustle scholarship competition for aspiring or established entrepreneurs. Winners included: Edwin Mendez-Rodriguez, freshman undeclared-undergraduate from Lincoln, Nebraska, and business partners Kaleb Kindler, junior agribusiness major from Alma, Nebraska, and Brock Vetick, junior agricultural economics major from Lincoln.   • Dr. Chris Timm, associate director of employer experience of the Business Career Center, received a Challenge Coin from the Nebraska Military and Veterans Success Center. Challenge coins, traditionally awarded to recognize membership, recognize an achievement or award team members who perform their duties extremely well.  
  • NRC Health awarded the 2019 Mike Hays Sales Center Scholarships to Alex Hoffman, senior agribusiness major from Elk Point, South Dakota; Ryan Kalkwarf, senior finance and marketing major from Lincoln; Hannah Krajicek, senior marketing major from Papillion, Nebraska; Kayleen Mourey, senior marketing major from Elkhorn, Nebraska; Allison Weber, senior management and marketing major from Groton, South Dakota, and Jenna Zeleny, senior marketing major from Gretna, Nebraska. Established in 2018, the scholarship awards top-performing students in the Nebraska Center for Sales Excellence certificate program. Recipients receive $4,400 applied toward their tuition and fees during the 2019-20 academic year.
  • Ziyan “Vicki” Zhang, senior accounting major from Lincoln, received the College of Business October Student of the Month award. The Student of the Month award, presented by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board, acknowledges outstanding undergraduate students in the college who impact the engagement and community of the college. Zhang serves as a member of the Cultural Ambassador Club and the Civitas Consulting Club and currently works as an undergraduate accounting research intern for Midwest Roadside Safety Facility.
  • Fifteen College of Business students earned cash prizes at this year’s 3-2-1 Quick Pitch competition. In just three minutes, students pitched their business ideas before a panel of judges for a chance to win $333.33. This year’s winners include: Andrew Adelson, senior business administration major from Polk, Nebraska; Jessica Aragon, sophomore management major from Plano, Texas; Max Van Arsdall, junior management major from Lincoln; Luke Bogus, junior management and marketing major from Columbus, Nebraska; Ashley Clegg, sophomore management major from Lincoln; Levi Gipson, MBA student from Lincoln; Joey Jeanetta, senior management major from Omaha, Nebraska; Connor Jolley, junior computer science and management major from Omaha; Katie Lamb, sophomore management and marketing major from Grafton, Wisconsin; Adrianna McKing, sophomore management and marketing major from Bellevue, Nebraska; Arihant Mittal, sophomore international business major from Jaipur, India; Wyatt Packard, senior management major from Lincoln; Grace Partridge, sophomore management and marketing major from Rapid City, South Dakota; Timothy Schartz, sophomore accounting and management major from El Segundo, California; and Jordan Seitz, sophomore supply chain management and analytics major from Gregory, Michigan.   • The management major was recognized by the Society of Human Resource Management for fully aligning with SHRM’s HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. Management majors in the human resource management track can pursue becoming a SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) in their final year of study.
  • In the latest edition of the annual The Princeton Review online MBA program rankings, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln online MBA program ranks No. 14.
Connection + Engagement
  • Three members of the Nebraska Business Honors Academy earned a new honor bestowed upon academy members: the academy blackshirt. The recipients received their blackshirt by embodying one or more of the five College of Business guiding principles and their commitment to the academy. Recipients included: Frances Munro, senior economics and finance major from Lincoln, guiding principle: asking bold questions; Justin Myers, senior economics major from Omaha, guiding principle: making it matter; and Megan McCann, senior actuarial science major from Stillwater, Oklahoma, guiding principle: looking to the future.
  • The university’s chapter of Beta Alpha Psi received recognition as a Distinguished Chapter for the 2018-19 academic year. According to the international president of Beta Alpha Psi, the Nebraska chapter far exceeded the baseline requirements of the organization and excelled in academics, professionalism and leadership. Debra Cosgrove, associate professor of practice in accountancy and faculty advisor for the chapter, also earned recognition for her role with the chapter.
  • Jennifer Davidson, assistant professor of practice in economics and president of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, discussed strategies for Black Friday shopping on 1011Now on November 27. She encouraged shoppers to do their research ahead of time, have a plan and try to avoid using credit cards when going shopping on Black Friday. Watch her interview here: https://go.unl.edu/o3oe.
  • Big Red Startups won $2,000 in Student Involvement’s Pitch a Program, a competition where any recognized student organization can pitch an event idea to a panel of judges to receive event planning resources, funding and marketing support. They pitched an event that will bring students across campus together to collaborate to help solve Lincoln’s biggest problems as found by a recent city survey.
