Program Features

Learn Law from Experts

Experience law classes taught by College of Law faculty as an undergraduate. You can design your own path with interdisciplinary electives, majors or minors.  

Interdisciplinary Coursework

Combine your interests in business and law by taking a unique blend of coursework that will prepare you for roles requiring legal knowledge but not necessarily a juris doctor degree. This major is one of the most interdisciplinary, with classes from four colleges. 

Begin Business Now

There’s no need to wait or fill out additional applications to be part of the College of Business. Unlike other Big Ten schools, once you’re enrolled, you can start taking business classes immediately.

Notable Courses

To earn your bachelor’s degree in business and law through the College of Business, you will take 120 credit hours of courses, equating to four or five courses per semester, on average.
Civil Liberties: Issues of Fairness and Equality (POLS 443)

Examine Supreme Court doctrine covering the rights of the accused, the right to privacy and the right to racial and sexual equality.

Legislation and Regulation (BLAW 378)

Learn about legislation, the structure of the U.S. government and factors that influence governmental policy. Examine how businesses can shape legislative and administrative agendas.

Negotiating and Conflict Management (MNGT 412)

Develop a set of useful negotiation strategies through simulations and debriefings. Identify types of conflict situations and appropriate, purposeful negotiation techniques.

White Collar Crime (CRIM 478)

Learn about white collar crime, including illegal acts committed by nonphysical means and concealment to obtain money or property for business or personal advantage.

Real Estate Principles and Practice (FINA 382)

Explore real estate areas, including ownership, sales, leases and agencies, managerial aspects of brokerage, property valuation and real estate appraising.

Natural Resource and Environmental Law (AECN 357)

Study environmental impact review, pollution control, waste management, endangered species preservation, land use regulation and water rights law.

Troy Smith, Professor of Business Ethics and Associate Professor of Management

Troy Smith teaches Negotiation and Conflict Resolution and Introduction to Organizational Behavior. He recently received the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award and was recognized as a Top 50 Undergraduate Business Professor worldwide by Poets&Quants. His research explores leadership, employee motivation, exhaustion and stress, employee proactivity and work-life dynamics.
