More than 80 graduates from the School of Accountancy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business Administration received recognition at the school’s sixth semi-annual graduation celebration on December 16. Despite icy conditions outside, the event at Lied Commons allowed students and their families to celebrate graduating seniors majoring in accounting as well as graduate students earning their master in professional accountancy (MPA) degrees.
“This is a proud moment for faculty as we get to congratulate students for the hard work they have put into graduating. We understand the time and effort it takes to complete a degree in accounting, and we thoroughly enjoy recognizing our graduates,” said Dr. Aaron Crabtree, director of the School of Accountancy and associate professor of accountancy.

Students and their families visited with the accounting faculty and staff and enjoyed a program which included a keynote address by Carrie Weber ’96, vice president-audit, risk and compliance at Ameritas. The Clatonia, Nebraska, native and co-chair of the School of Accountancy Advisory Board offered advice to the graduates as they begin their accounting careers.
“There are so many opportunities out there for you in accounting, and everyone’s path is different – whether you stay in public accounting or explore private industry, go to large or small firm or bounce back and forth. The base of knowledge gained in your accounting degree will be of great benefit to you whatever path your career takes,” she said. “Above all advice I can give you, I challenge you to remember this is a journey to learn, grow and have fun.”
She also encouraged students to stay connected to their alma mater.

“I am thrilled to be here at UNL today because I remember what UNL gave to me that allowed me to be successful in my career. I hope you remember to give back to CBA in some way and express your appreciation of the opportunities offered to you here,” she said.
Dr. Scott Seavey, assistant professor of accountancy, and Jina Morris, MPA coordinator and assistant professor of practice in accountancy, presented the graduates with certificates and gifts honoring their achievements. Nineteen students earned their MPA.
