Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity Kick-Starts Member Activity

The Delta Sigma Pi (DSP) business fraternity at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has kick-started member activity by offering a pair of Cole Haan shoes students can win by being active in the organization. Morgan Kuhl, a freshman accounting and finance major from Omaha, Neb., was awarded the shoes in January, just in time for important recruiting events this semester.

“Students are getting the message you need to dress for the job you want,” said Dr. Laurie Miller, assistant professor of practice in economics and adviser to the DSP students. “An anonymous family donor wanted to give back to DSP because of the impact the group had on their child’s life. They believe the group helps students professionally, and their gift of Cole Haan shoes encourages our members to get involved.”

Students receive points for showing up at weekly meetings, going to events like career fairs and participating in fundraising events.

Being new on campus, Kuhl believed it was even more important for her to get involved.

“DSP is a great way to network and meet people from local businesses,” Kuhl said. “I didn’t plan on winning the shoes but it was a great incentive because I now have a great pair of shoes to wear when I meet potential employers.”

As a freshman, Kuhl is already pursing internships. She attended the UNL Career Fair in February and made contact with several potential employers.

“Employers need to know you’re taking the process seriously. Now that I have the shoes I can build on it,” she said.

She encourages other business students to get involved in DSP.

“Companies come and talk about what they look for in their employees and give us interviewing tips. It’s important to learn what companies like Gallup, Hudl and Kaplan are looking for in the interview process. I also have a better idea where I want to go with my career now,” said Kuhl.

DSP has 47 active members and meets every Monday evening at 8 p.m.

“We have a self-sufficient group of students,” said Miller. “They’re planning our annual spina bifida basketball and volleyball tournament fundraiser which is another way students can earn points and learn what it means to ‘pay it forward’ – which is the whole idea the donor wanted to impress by gifting the shoes.”

Delta Sigma Pi is open to any student earning a major offered through the College of Business Administration.
