College of Business Continues Climb in U.S. News & World Report Rankings

College of Business Continues Climb in U.S. News & World Report Rankings
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business climbed to No. 45 in the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings.
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business climbed to No. 45 in the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings for undergraduate business programs. Up three spots from last year’s rankings, the increase continues an upward trend for the college over the past several years.

The rankings provide context for how other schools view the College of Business, as they are compiled in part based on peer assessment surveys. To qualify for inclusion in the rankings, schools must have their undergraduate business program accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Business program expansion, enrollment growth and moving into the new, privately-funded 240,000-square-foot Howard L. Hawks Hall, all demonstrate tangible growth to validate the movement in the rankings. Interim Dean Kathy Farrell, believes the entire Nebraska Business community can take credit for the climb.

“Being recognized as 45th among these elite private and public business schools is a great honor,” said Farrell. “It is affirmation we are making great strides toward becoming a world-class college. The opening of our new building – Howard L. Hawks Hall – with nearly 900 people in attendance at our ribbon cutting ceremony and our recent 14.9 percent enrollment increase in first-time freshmen and six percent overall, also indicate that our new and expanding programs are attractive for our ever-growing Nebraska Business Community – our students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, business partners and friends.”

More than 80 new faculty have joined the College of Business in the past six years.

The U.S. News undergraduate business school rankings are based solely on the judgments of deans and senior faculty members at peer institutions. U.S. News surveyed deans and senior faculty members at each undergraduate business program accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. These deans and faculty members – two at each AACSB-accredited business program – were asked to rate the quality of all programs.

“While the importance of institutional rankings is often debated, many of the metrics on which these rankings are based are an important part of our university’s mission as well as areas we have identified for improvement,” Chancellor Ronnie Green said. “We are actively pursuing strategies to have greater success and to build upon our related accomplishments, such as our record enrollment.”

Nebraska Business offers 10 undergraduate majors – accounting, actuarial science, agribusiness, business administration, economics, finance, international business, management, marketing and supply chain management. In the past five years, the college’s undergraduate enrollment grew by 30 percent.

Several of the college’s newer business programs expanded in the past year, including the Clifton Builders program which develops entrepreneurial skills in students with a propensity for starting new ventures, the addition of one-on-one strengths coaching sessions in the Professional Enhancement (PrEP) program required for all business students and an increase in the number business-oriented global immersion programs that give students an opportunity to travel abroad.
