Business Students Honored for Academic Achievement

Business Students Honored for Academic Achievement
Dean Kathy Farrell addresses the audience at the honors festivities.
University of Nebraska–Lincoln students celebrated their academic accomplishments with faculty and staff during the College of Business Student Awards Reception held Thursday, September 20, in Howard L. Hawks Hall. The informal event recognized more than 400 Nebraska Business students receiving a total of more than $550,000 in scholarships, as well as 88 students earning one of four awards: the William Gold Scholar Award, Clifford M. Hicks Scholar Award, James E. LeRossignol Scholar Award or Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key.

“To receive one of these awards is evidence of these students’ dedication and commitment to academic excellence,” said Dr. Kathy Farrell, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean of the College of Business. “The Nebraska Business community is proud of their efforts as future graduates and leaders.”

The William Gold Scholar Award, established in 1925 and named for the founder of Gold and Company, honors the top members of the freshman class. Students receive the award as sophomores, but are recognized for their academic accomplishments during their freshman year. The 23 recipients, from a class of more than 900 students, all earned a cumulative 4.0 grade-point average.

Twenty-five students from a class of more than 700 received Clifford M. Hicks Scholar Awards. The award, named after Professor Hicks, who served on the College of Business Administration faculty for 43 years, including 18 years as chair of the Department of Business Organization and Management, recognizes students in the top academic standing of their sophomore class.

The LeRossignol Scholar Awards honor James E. LeRossignol, who served as the first dean of the College of Business Administration from 1913 to 1941. Recognized for the top academic accomplishments through their junior year, 35 students out of a class of 1,000 received this award.

The final award celebrates recent College of Business graduates. All five recipients of the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key completed their academic career with a cumulative grade-point average of 4.0.

“We're proud to have a larger number of students receive the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key,” said Jennifer Mostek, associate director of business advising and student engagement. “It speaks to the caliber of those graduating from the College of Business and it’s exciting to see them honored for their perseverance.”
