Business Students Connect with Minneapolis Employers

Eleven students from the College of Business at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln traveled to Minneapolis on a career expedition hosted by the Business Career Center during spring break. Throughout four days, students networked with multiple professionals and alumni, and visited eight different employers.

“We take these trips to expose students to a new city and have them learn about its culture. It also gives us an opportunity to introduce them to a wide range of industries,” said Dr. Chris Timm, associate director of employer experience and outreach. “We want to develop additional opportunities for the students. These expeditions give them the chance to build their own network, not only with the employers, but with the Career Center and their fellow classmates as well.”

The students visited a variety of companies in Minneapolis, some of which included Ameriprise, Colle McVoy, Thrivent and Travellers. They also toured Target Field, home to the Minnesota Twins. Students go on these trips for a variety of reasons.

Hong Nguyen, freshman actuarial science major from Nha Trang, Vietnam, said, “I went on this trip to seek potential opportunities for myself with the employers we met with. I also looked to expand my network, something I believe to be one of the most important factors as a business student. Having a network filled with diverse people opens my future up to a lot of different possibilities.”

Students had the opportunity to network with local Minneapolis professionals and alumni from the College of Business during both a welcoming dinner and a closing day breakfast.

“The professionals selected to network with us for the dinner and breakfast were great. The discussions we had were informative, all while having a relaxed feeling to them,” said Emily Wiebeck, senior management major from Lincoln, Nebraska. “A piece of advice that stuck with me from one of the professionals was to stay open to the opportunities around you. Even if you know what your end goal is, you might end up taking a different route to get there or even find a different end goal. All the conversations I had with the professionals and alumni helped me in developing my professional self.”
