College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Research + Discovery

  • Wesley Boyce, assistant professor of practice in supply chain management and analytics and program director of master of science in supply chain management, presented at the Online Learning Consortium Innovate Conference in Nashville with Brian Verdine, who affiliates with Yellowdig and the University of Delaware. The talk centered around learning communities and how self-determination theory, which focuses on autonomy, competence and relatedness, can be applied to make them more effective. Read the study.
  • Jimmy Downes, director of the School of Accountancy, George and Evelyn Brewster Professor of Accountancy and associate professor of accountancy, appeared on the April 29 episode of the Grow Lincoln radio show to discuss the shortage of accountants and how the College of Business is helping address it. Listen to the segment, which starts at 37:26 left on the recording.
  • A new study co-authored by Tom Kubick, Delmar A. Lienemann Sr. Presidential Chair and professor of accountancy, was featured in an April 27 article on Forbes.com. Kubick's research explored whether executives who experienced accounting-related problems at a former company were more or less likely to experience similar problems at their next employer. The study, "The Effect of Managerial Adverse Experience on Financial Reporting," is forthcoming in The Accounting Review.
  • Daniel Tannenbaum, associate professor of economics; and co-authors received the American Economic Journal Applied Economics Best Paper Award for "The Evolution of Work in the United States" that was published in the April 2020 issue. Selected by the journal's editorial board, the award highlights the best paper published in the journal over the last three years.

Learning + Transformation

  • A five-member team of accounting majors representing Nebraska in Deloitte's national Audit Innovation Campus Challenge in April in Westlake, Texas, placed first out of 55 schools. Each student on the winning team receives $2,000, and the Nebraska School of Accountancy receives $10,000. Twelve teams advanced to the finals from the regional competition. Between the two contests, the team spent almost 400 hours combined preparing their paper and two rounds of final presentations to Deloitte judges and competitors. Members include: Cole Frye, accounting major from Ashland, Nebraska; Alex Nguyen, accounting major from Lincoln; Alvan Tran, accounting and finance major from Lincoln; Morgan Wallinger, accounting and agribusiness major from Stuart, Nebraska; and Bruno Weiss Salles, accounting and finance major from Porto Alegre, Brazil.
  • The University of Nebraska–Lincoln debate team won a second consecutive national championship at the National Forensic Association’s National Tournament, April 14-17, at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. The team was led by accounting major Nicholas Wallenburg from Lenexa, Kansas, who went 11-0 on his way to winning the individual national championship. Wallenburg earned his degree in accounting, with minors in law and business, communication studies and pre-law in December 2022. This spring, he began studying for his master’s degree in professional accountancy. Read the Nebraska Today story.
  • Fifty teams competed in the annual Global Case Competition, where students pitched solutions for a global food security problem in a case developed by Scoular. First Place ($5,000) winners were: Grant Cope, economics major from Omaha; Aidan Linder, supply chain management major from Gretna, Nebraska; and Nolan Johnson, economics and political science major from Omaha. Second Place ($3,000) went to: Chase Kavanaugh, accounting major from Lincoln; Nick Lauver, actuarial science and finance major from Papillion, Nebraska; Eduardo Sicilia, management major from Cancún, Mexico; and Braden Starck, finance major from Glen Carbon, Illinois. Third Place ($1,500) was: Erica Gesner, international business major from Allen, Texas; Lauren Hargreaves, management major from Dunedin, Florida; and Morgan Scherrer, international business major from Highlands Ranch, Colorado. The Fourth Place ($500) team included: Martin Little, international business major from Lincoln; Hannah Osborn, management major from Dwight, Nebraska; Alison Steger, management major from Eagan, Minnesota; and Brody Thomson, business administration major from Menomonie, Wisconsin.
  • Ten business students were among those recognized at Husker Athletics' Night at the Lied awards. Accounting graduate student and football player Trent Hixson, '21, of Omaha was recognized as the 2022-23 Male Student-Athlete of the Year. Cecelia Ossi, finance major and rifle student-athlete from Annadale, N.J., earned Best Female Athlete after winning the NCAA Championship in the smallbore. Malcolm Hartzog, business administration major from Silver Creek, Mississippi, won Outstanding Male Freshman Athlete for his performance in football. Three business majors won Heart & Soul Awards: Mikey Hoffer, '22 management major and men's track and field student-athlete from Shawnee, Kansas; Passmore Mudundulu, marketing major and men's track and field student-athlete from Lincoln; Megan Whittaker, '22 finance major and women's golf student-athlete from Elkhorn. Four business majors received the Sam Foltz 27 Hero Leadership Award, including: Bekka Allick, management major and volleyball student-athlete from Lincoln; Michael Booker III, business administration, football student-athlete from Grand Prairie, Texas; Efry Cervantes, management, baseball student-athlete from Tucson, Arizona; and Kathryn Thaler, management, women's gymnastics student-athlete from Katy, Texas.   • Seven students placed in the top three in competitions held at the 2023 Nebraska FBLA State Leadership Conference in Kearney. Lena Banach, international business and marketing major from Gurnee, Illinois, placed second in Administrative Support Technology. Jessica Chen, economics and computer science major from Lincoln, placed first in Foundations of Accounting, Economic Analysis and Decision Making; second in Business Ethics and Business Presentation; and third in Microeconomics. Aaron Morrissey, business and law major from Omaha, placed first in Macroeconomics and second in Hospitality Management. Connor Nichols, computer science major from Raymond, Nebraska, placed first in Networking Concepts and second in Cybersecurity and Information Management. Kimberly Osborn, accounting major from Tilden, Nebraska, placed first in Marketing Concepts and Sports Management & Marketing; second in Entrepreneurship Concepts; and third in Information Management and Organizational Behavior and Leadership. Taylor Shellenberger, management major from Pueblo Colorado, placed second in Business Sustainability and third in Human Resources Management. Tyson Shields, mathematics and broadcasting major from Lincoln, placed first in Foundations of Finance, Information Management, Microeconomics, Retail Management and Business Communications, and third in Programming Concepts.
  • Kellogg "King" Apetse, a business administration major from Omaha, Nebraska, won a $25,000 scholarship from the Taco Bell Foundation for his animation project. He works at a Taco Bell in Lincoln, where his dad is general manager. View the KLKN story.

Connection + Engagement

  • Nine students earned their Employment Readiness Certificates (ERC). Designed to help international students discover and develop skills to seek internship and job opportunities, the ERC program includes career development workshops, coaching appointments, group service projects and success skills development. The students earning an ERC this spring include: Majid Al Harthy, supply chain management major from Muscat, Oman; Djamel Ba, mechanical engineering major from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso; Nitin Bansal, biological sciences major from Bharatpur, India; Daniel Cerni, international business major from Canberra, Australia; Abbos Ishonov, finance major from Khujand, Tajikistan; Nikolas Mainieri Mancio, business administration and finance major from Porto Alegre, Brazil; Hoa Nguyen, actuarial science major from Halong, Vietnam; Shaghayegh Rouhi, economics major from Karaj, Iran; and Kai Xing Toon, broadcasting major from Perak, Malaysia.
  • Seven students received awards at the annual Clifton Strengths Institute (CSI) Recognition Ceremony. Maria Heyen, senior international business and Clifton Builders management major from Astoria, Oregon, received the Mark Pogue Award, honoring the former CSI executive director. The Outstanding Builder Awards presented to Nick Anderson, Clifton Builders management major from Omaha and Maria Heyen, honors students in the Clifton Builder Program who take on challenges to create change when others may back away. Abbie Grimm, accounting major from Kansas City, Kansas, and Ridley Miller, finance and management major from Omaha, earned Outstanding Coach Awards for exceeding expectations in their work to advance strengths. The UNL Housing and College of Business Enrollment Management teams received the Strengths Partnership Award. This new award honors departments on campus that have made an intentional effort and commitment to applying strengths within their work. Aaryan Naik, economics major from Elkhorn, received the Royal Star Coach award for getting a perfect score on feedback from those he coached, going above and beyond for students and making a positive impact. Four student strengths coaches were recognized for coaching more than 100 sessions: Maria Heyen; Ridley Miller; Chris Fishback, actuarial science and finance major from Lincoln; and Madelyn Patterson, marketing major from Lenexa, Kansas.
  • Five Nebraska Business Honors Academy students earned their academy blackshirts. The recipients received their blackshirt by embodying one or more of the five College of Business guiding principles and their commitment to the academy. Honorees include: Natalie Karrels, sophomore supply chain management major from Brookfield, Wisconsin; Colby Marsden, junior finance major from Stilwell, Kansas; Lucy Peterkin, senior business and law major from Omaha, Nebraska; Meghan Schuette, senior international business and marketing major from Omaha, Nebraska; and TJ Taylor, junior economics and management major from Lincoln.
  • Madison Cappellano was selected for the First Generation Nebraska Advisory Board, which develops, implements and assesses First Generation Nebraska programs and events at the university.
  • Maria Heyen received one of the university's 10 Student Luminary Awards for her exceptional leadership and commitment to improving campus life. Read the story.
  • Tamera Ward, received a Dean's Coin for her 21.5 years of service to the College of Business. She retired in early May.
