College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

  • The College of Business honored four faculty with research awards: Dirk Black, Forvis Professor of Accounting and associate professor of accounting, Emerging Scholar Research Award; Varkey Titus Jr., Amy and J. E. Van Horne Jr Chair and associate professor of management, Distinguished Research Award; Yuzhou Chen, Ph.D. candidate in accountancy, Ph.D. Student Research Award; and Izu Mbaraonye, Ph.D. Student Research Award.   • Brandon Fogel, Ph.D. Candidate in Management, discussed “Gentelligence,” a new book he co-authored, in a May 13 Forbes article. The book focuses on how to make intergenerational workforces work better. Read the Forbes article.
  • Jake Messersmith, department chair and associate professor of management, won the Best Paper Award for HR-Entrepreneurship Research in the Human Resources (HR) Division of the Academy of Management. The award-winning article is titled, “Built to Last: A Human Capital Resource Perspective on Diversity and New Venture Survival."
  • Two students received stipends for summer research projects through the UCARE program: Juliana Amato, economics major from Bloomingdale, Illinois, “Surveying the Structures of U.S. Water Governance,” and Eric Liu, senior actuarial science major from Shenyang, China, “Computational Models for Artificial Micro-Robots.” Read the Nebraska Today story.

Learning + Transformation

  • A partnership between the College of Business and Standing Bear High School was announced. Lincoln Public Schools and the university will collaborate to offer a business focus program at the new school. Read the College of Business story. Read the Lincoln Journal Star article.
  • The College of Business honored four faculty with teaching awards: Jina Morris, associate professor of practice in accountancy and Master of Professional Accountancy coordinator, Excellence in Teaching Award; Troy Smith, Professor of Business Ethics and associate professor of management, Distinguished Teaching Award; Emre Unlu, Paul C. Burmeister College Professor of Investments, professor of finance and executive director of the Center for Executive and Professional Development, MBA Distance Teaching Award; and Izu Mbaraonye, Ph.D. Student Teaching Award.   • A record-breaking 18 business faculty earned promotions that go into effect August 1. Read the College of Business story.
  • Seven seniors in the College of Business earned recognition as Chancellor's Scholars. The highest academic award the university offers goes to students who earned an A in every undergraduate class. Scholars include: Giancarlo Cimaglia, actuarial science major from Palatine, Illinois; Harley Edic, accounting major from Lincoln, Nebraska; Lexie Fiedler, actuarial science major from Huntley, Illinois; Kennedy Johnston, economics major from Carbon, Indiana; Bailee Steinle, accounting major from Lincoln; Jamison Theye, accounting major from Lincoln; and Grayson Wegener, international business major from Denton, Nebraska.   • Several business students were recognized at Husker Athletics' Night at the Lied event. Two senior economics majors earned the Outstanding Scholar Award for maintaining a 3.9+ GPA: Tom Westenberger, economics major from Wuppertal, Germany, and Ashley Zugay, economics major from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ridge Lovett, economics and communication studies major from Post Falls, Idaho, was recognized as the Best Male Athlete for his performance in wrestling. Nine business majors received the Sam Foltz 27 Hero Leadership Award, including: Elliott Brown, business administration major from Omaha; Kenzie Knuckles, ’21, marketing major from Lincoln; Daniel Mattern, marketing major from Omaha; Brice Matthews, finance major from Houston, Texas; Passmore Mudundulu Jr., marketing major from Lincoln; Tristan Nelko, marketing major from Plymouth, Minnesota; Kristina Novak, management major from Radovljica, Slovenia; Cecelia Ossi, finance major from Annadale, New Jersey; and Zugay.   • Eleven of the record-breaking 35 Huskers who earned Gilman International Scholarships were business students. The Gilman is a nationally competitive scholarship awarded twice a year by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. Recipients and where they plan to study include: Ashley Blimling, business administration major from Omaha, Greece; Devan Buescher, management major from Lincoln, China; Kaylee DonJuan Mendoza, international business major from Crete, Nebraska, Spain; Emmett Gutz, marketing major from Salisbury, Missouri, Iceland; John Karpov, business administration major from Raymond, Nebraska, Rwanda; Martin Little, international business major from Lincoln, Denmark; Enrique Martinez, business administration major from Lincoln, Japan; Eduardo Mora, management major from Madison, Nebraska, United Kingdom; Zeta Nguyen, accounting major from Lincoln, South Korea; Tucker Nichols, finance major from Lincoln, Spain; and Michelle Saqui, marketing major from Omaha, Italy. Connection + Engagement

  • Five faculty and staff were honored for their service to the college prior to their retirements: J. Jeff Burdic; Deborah Eisloeffel; John Geppert, professor emeritus of finance; David Rosenbaum, professor emeritus of economics; and Marjorie Shelley, professor emeritus of accountancy.   • The College of Business honored three faculty and staff with service awards: Kendra Ritchie, director of recruitment, D'vee Buss Students First Award; Amanda Colborn, assistant director of facilities and events , Distinguished Service Award; and Jake Messersmith, Faculty Service Award.   • Six Nebraska Business Honors Academy students earned their academy blackshirts. The recipients received their blackshirt by embodying one or more of the five College of Business guiding principles and their commitment to the academy. Honorees include: Ellie Foral, economics and supply chain management, Bellevue, Nebraska; Maddi Grimm, economics major from Bellevue; Leo Ray, finance and computer science major from Omaha; Whitney Schwisow, actuarial science major from Beatrice, Nebraska; Haley Szymczak, accounting major from Bartlett, Illinois; and William Weiner, actuarial science major from Sterling, Kansas.
  • Two business students were recognized at the end-of-year celebration for the first Inclusive Business Leaders (IBL), a cohort-based program of first-year business students who demonstrate a commitment to making Nebraska Business and the field of business a more inclusive environment for all. The honorees included: Naree Philavanh, management and marketing major from Lincoln, IBL Change Agent Award, recognizing her involvement to improve inclusion on campus, and Niko Schultz, business administration major from Joliet, Illinois, IBL Community Builder Award, recognizing how he went above and beyond in making other IBL members feel welcomed, valued and respected.
  • Eight students earned medallions in the International Business Medallion Program. To earn bronze, silver, gold or platinum medallion status, business students pursue experiences focused on career building, global citizenship and well-being. Students recognized and the highest medallion level achieved were: Kadeja Al-Kanass, international business major from Lincoln, platinum; Chase Blum, international business major from Minnetonka, Minnesota, gold; Maddie Davis, international business major from Omaha, gold; Matthew Dutka, international business major from Lumberton Township, New Jersey, gold; Grace Hansen, international business major from Prior Lake, Minnesota, gold; Taylor Hogan, international business major from Omaha, platinum; Muranmok Riyangow, international business major from Lincoln, gold; Bailee Steinle, accounting major from Lincoln, bronze.
  • After winning the 2022 State Farm Business with Integrity Case Competition, a team of business students competed and placed third in the International Accreditation Council for Business Education case competition held in Costa Mesa, California. IACBE partnered with Donato’s Pizza, an Ohio-based restaurant chain, to solve a specific marketing problem. Team members included: Luke Buettner, actuarial science major from Lincoln; Nick Lauver, actuarial science and finance major from Papillion; Gunnar Lombard, actuarial science major from Farmington Hills, Michigan; and Aaryan Naik, economics major from Omaha.
  • Three student strengths coaches were recognized by the Clifton Strengths Institute for completing more than 100 coaching sessions. They included: Ellie Hellman, management major from Omaha; Grace Partridge, economics and political science major from Rapid City, South Dakota; and Jordan Seitz, supply chain management major from Gregory, Michigan.
  • Jake Bowman, was named Student of the Year by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. Bowman was selected from a pool of the year's past students of the month. A Clifton Builders management major from Lincoln, Bowman was chosen because he created a legacy in the College of Business through helping launch the NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) student advisor program for all Husker student-athletes.   • Jake Drake was elected president of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska (ASUN). The business minor studies political science and is from Murray, Nebraska. Read the story.
  • Kathy Farrell, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean and professor of finance, appeared in an April 25 KMTV story. Farrell spoke about this year’s three inductees into the Nebraska Business Hall of Fame, which was established by the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the College of Business.   • Emily Kist, a finance major from Pierre, South Dakota, received the Outstanding Honors Graduate Award. The University Honors Program selected exceptional graduates from each college based on their contributions to the Honors community and participation in Honors experiences.   • Donald Nam, actuarial science major from Hwaseong, South Korea, was honored as the Student of the Month by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. At Nebraska, he serves on the leadership team of the Actuarial Science Club, is a member of the Nebraska Business Honors Academy and works at Campus Recreation. He interns at New York Life Insurance Company this summer.
  • Joe Petsick, will represent the greater Omaha region, which includes Lincoln and Council Bluffs, Iowa, in the MIT Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program over the next two years. The Omaha team of regional leaders will learn and adapt the frameworks developed by MIT to accelerate innovation-driven entrepreneurship in the region. Read the Omaha Chamber of Commerce story.
  • Taylor Shellenberger, management major from Pueblo, Colorado, received the Member of the Year Award from Nebraska Phi Beta Lambda at their State Leadership Conference in Kearney, Nebraska. The award recognizes an outstanding Phi Beta Lambda member from any of the university chapters in Nebraska for their activity and involvement.
  • Emre Unlu appeared on the May 14 Grow Lincoln radio show to talk about the new Nebraska Nonprofit Management Institute coordinated by the college's Center for Executive and Professional Development. Listen to the show.
