Achievements for December 2022
College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.

Research + Discovery

  • Two business majors were awarded stipends to participate in research with a faculty mentor this fall through the university’s Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience (UCARE) Program. They are: Juliana Amato, senior economics major from Bloomingdale, Illinois, “Surveying the Structures of U.S. Water Governance,” and Chloe Hoover, junior management major from York, Pennsylvania, “Sustainability in Dining at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.” Read the Nebraska Today article.
  • Özgür Araz, Ron and Carol Cope professor of supply chain management and analytics, and S. Sajeesh, associate professor of marketing recently published interdisciplinary research in Production and Operations Management that examines how food-producing firms should respond and adapt to the evolving consumer trends and policies.   • The Executive Vice Chancellor’s office selected College of Business faculty members Sajeesh and Emre Unlu, Paul C. Burmeister College Professor of Investments, professor of finance and executive director of the Center for Executive and Professional Development, along with 17 other Nebraska faculty to participate in the Faculty Leadership in Academia: From Inspiration to Reality (FLAIR) program. The program provides professional development for University of Nebraska–Lincoln faculty who are considering a leadership role or are in their first leadership position and considering continuing on a leadership path.   • Eric Thompson, department chair, K.H. Nelson College Professor of Economics and director of Bureau of Business Research was interviewed for multiple stories including a Nov. 14 KLKN story on how a divided Congress could slow inflation; a Nov. 14 article in The Reader on how immigration policies affect the Nebraska economy; and a Nov. 20 Omaha World-Herald article on Nebraska’s non-farm employment rebounding to pre-pandemic levels.
  • A new survey of Nebraska businesses led by Thompson and Mitch Herian, project director of the Bureau of Business Research, both with the university’s Bureau of Business Research, was highlighted in a Nov. 11 Nebraska Examiner article on remote working in Nebraska. The survey shows that the trend might have leveled off. Read the Nebraska Examiner story.

Learning + Transformation

  • The MBA@Nebraska program offers one of the nation's most outstanding online MBA programs, according to Poets&Quants. Ranked No. 15 in its 2023 ranking of the Best Online MBA Programs in the U.S., the MBA@Nebraska program jumped 12 spots from last year. Read the College of Business story.
  • More than 30 students took top prizes for their business pitches at the annual 3-2-1 Quick Pitch Competition hosted by the Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship. For photos of all winners from across the university, view the Facebook photo album.

Connection + Engagement

  • Four people were named to the college's Inclusive Exclusive Advisory Board. They include: Carolina Barraza, sophomore finance major from Courtland, Kansas; Maya Elias, freshman finance major from Lincoln, Nebraska; Brett Neely, assistant professor of management, representing CoB faculty; and Caitlin Smith, academic advisor in Business Advising and Student Engagement, representing CoB staff.
  • Erin Burnette, director of the Nebraska Business Honors Academy, received a Dean's Coin from Laurie Miller, associate dean of undergraduate programs and curriculum and associate professor of practice in economics, for going above and beyond her job duties to assist and be a resource for students navigating medical or mental health challenges while going to college.
  • Billy Hansen, assistant director of technology support, Bridget Harris, assistant director of media production, and Lance Schendt, audio-visual support associate of IT Services, received Dean's Coins for going above and beyond in helping lead innovations in the college's classroom technology, new media and tech support efforts during a time of transition in IT Services.
  • Ethan Heinemann, sophomore accounting major from Bennington, Nebraska, was selected as a Student of the Month by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. He is involved in the Nebraska Business Honors Academy and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity philanthropy efforts. He also is a longtime volunteer for the Omaha Take Steps fundraiser walk and Crohn's and Colitis Foundation in Omaha.
  • Hayden Lloyd, senior economics and management major from Monument, Colorado, was selected as a Student of the Month by the Nebraska Business Student Advisory Board. She helped restart the Franchise Club and served on the leadership team of Delta Sigma Pi and the Career Closet, which offers free professional clothing to all University of Nebraska–Lincoln students. She serves as a learning assistant in two entrepreneurship classes and as a tutor for the college's Teaching and Learning Center. 
  • The College of Business co-hosted the 18th annual Women in Business conference with the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. Morgan Shaw Parker, '99, president and chief operating officer of the Atlanta Dream, served as the keynote speaker. View Facebook photo album.
