SIFE Changes Name to Enactus But Entrepreneurial Spirit Remains the Same

One of the best known student organizations at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently changed their name from Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) to Enactus. The name Enactus comes from a blend of words – Entrepreneurial, Action and Us.

The new name provides greater emphasis on the organizations deep commitment to entrepreneurial action. Enactus CEO Alvin Rohrs believes the name change will strengthen the organization’s long standing tradition of using entrepreneurial action as a catalyst for progress.

“Our core belief has always been that the same kind of creativity and rigor and accountability that fuels businesses around the world is not only transferrable but actually essential to human progress,” Rohrs said.

UNL Enactus students are a case in point. Their entrepreneurial efforts are used to fund outreach programs that help local, national and global communities.

During the past year Enactus students at Nebraska have initiated programs to help struggling refugee farmers, mothers with cancer, impoverished Native Americans and abused women in Sri Lanka. The project funds are generated from businesses such as the Daily Drip Café located in the College of Business Administration and an online auction business that resells surplus items for departments across campus.

“We see an opportunity with this name change,” said Enactus student Jordan Bates, a junior English major from Spencer, Iowa. “Enthusiasm and adaptability have always been central to our attitude, and that’s what the spirit of entrepreneurship is all about.”

UNL Enactus is operated out of the Center for Entrepreneurship, which is located in the College of Business Administration. Students from all colleges are welcome to participate in the organization.
