Kathy's Point: A Place to Do Big Things

Kathy's Point: A Place to Do Big Things
Dean Kathy Farrell and Sam Allgood, faculty director of the Teaching and Learning Center and Edwin J. Faulkner Professor of Economics, celebrate the fifth anniversary of Howard L. Hawks Hall with students, faculty and staff at the College of Business Back to School Bash in August. Made possible through private donations, the $84 million building was built by alumni for future alumni.

As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of Howard L. Hawks Hall, I want to express our gratitude to those who made the new home for the College of Business possible. Hawks Hall marked our emergence as a premier business school and it also serves as a reminder to aim high and think big. It’s also where research, collaboration and innovation help solve problems, and business is taught to be used as a force for good.

Hawks Hall is also where big things are done by amazing people. The September Inside Nebraska Business newsletter features the four-generation Uryasz family who started a legacy of Husker Power, MBA student Steven Cohen who is earning his third degree from Nebraska, our Clifton Builders as they help a business in our community, and our seven new business faculty who joined us this fall to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.

This fall kicked off with students bringing energy to classes, events, and even when hanging out in and around the building. There is no better way to celebrate our anniversary than by experiencing Hawks Hall full of people creating the future they want to see. Mark your calendars to reconnect, learn and celebrate with us at one or more of the following events or upcoming professional development opportunities.

  • Please join us at our annual Business Alumni Tailgate, held Saturday, October 1, 3:30-6:30 p.m., before the Nebraska v. Indiana game. Reconnect with alumni, faculty and staff while enjoying Hawks Hall as we celebrate its fifth anniversary. The $10 registration fee will be donated to the N Business Start Something Fund which provides support to the college for priority needs. (No minors under 21 may attend due to university policy.) Don’t miss out, register today!
  • Homecoming Events for Alumni and Friends include three great events on Friday, September 30: 1) Cornstock, a carnival-like celebration for Husker fans of all ages goes 4-8 p.m. at Memorial Stadium East Plaza, 2) Homecoming Parade, which starts at 6 p.m. and goes by Hawks Hall and Cornstock, and 3) Multicultural Homecoming Cocktail Mixer, 7-9 p.m. at the Wick Alumni Center.
  • Advance your skills during our Power Lunches offered by our Center for Executive and Professional Development (CEPD). The in-person lunches in Lincoln facilitate space for thoughtful discussion around today’s important topics unlocking motivation in the workplace and leading with positivity. They run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and cost $49, including lunch and parking.
  • Our new Nonprofit Management Institute offers two more executive certificate programs this fall. The in-person and virtual programs enable nonprofit professionals to refine skills in management, finance and fundraising.
  • Our Federal and State Income Tax Institute provides tax education and recommendations on ways to advise clients regarding recent changes. Earn continuing education credits and ethics training in a location convenient to you whether online or at one of our six two-day institutes held in November and December around the state in Scottsbluff, Kearney, Grand Island, Omaha, Norfolk and Lincoln.
  • Accelerate your career with a four-course, online graduate certificate. This fall, we launched our tenth program with a certificate in strategic innovation and entrepreneurship. These offer a smooth transition if you decide also to pursue a master’s degree.

I hope you will join us to relive old memories and make some new ones.

Together, we are Nebraska Business.
