NRC Health (NRC) honored two University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration students, Shayne Arriola and Joshua Nelson, with the annual Rising Stars Scholarship. NRC has offered the scholarship to two UNL students with an interest in business development, marketing and entrepreneurship for the last five years. Both students received $2,000 to apply toward their tuition and fees during the spring 2017 semester.

A junior marketing major and psychology minor from Grand Island, Nebraska, Arriola is pursuing a certificate of professional selling through the Center for Sales Excellence at CBA. He participates in multiple campus and national organizations – Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Scarlet Guard and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society to name a few. He also works as a systems information intern at the University of Nebraska Foundation and serves as a building manager at the Nebraska Union.

“Being selected by the NRC is a huge honor. The organization does so much for the Center for Sales Excellence and being recognized by such an established and well-respected organization means a lot to me,” Arriola said. “As a first generation college student with a disabled single mother of three, paying for college on my own can be difficult. Knowing next semester will be more financially manageable helps alleviate that burden and allows me to really focus on enjoying my time at UNL.”

In the future, he plans to pursue a sales or marketing career and eventually create a non-profit organization in his hometown and draw young talent to the area.

Nelson, a senior marketing major from Omaha, Nebraska, participates in the American Marketing Association (AMA) Collegiate Chapter and Order of Omega and is pursuing a certificate of professional selling through the Center for Sales Excellence and was a sales intern at Hudl. After receiving the scholarship, NRC Health hired him as a business development intern for Market Insight Sales – a stepping stone to his future goal of working in health related sales.

“It was very special to me to win the scholarship and I am thankful for being given the opportunity to apply,” Nelson said. “Winning the award from NRC Health means a lot, especially when a large portion of their employees are in sales. It showed that I did a good job selling myself and my leadership goals and future plans.”

The recipients, their families, NRC leadership and UNL faculty and staff attended a celebration dinner November 29. Arriola and Nelson’s names will be displayed on the Rising Stars Scholarship plaque outside of the Department of Marketing office in CBA.
