Research + Discovery
  • Dr. Tammie Fischer, director of the Center for Economic Education and assistant professor of practice in economics, offered expert advice for college students considering credit cards in an interview with WalletHub. Read the article at:  https://go.unl.edu/creditcardsforcollegestudents.
  • Dr. James “Jim” Gentry, professor emeritus of marketing, was honored at the Macromarketing Conference in Cleveland with a plenary session entitled “Jim Gentry’s Contributions to Consumer Research.” Panel members included Nebraska marketing Ph.D. alumni Stacey Baker, Ahmet Ekici, Jie Fowler and Terri Rittenburg, along with colleagues John Mittelstaedt and Cliff Shultz. Gentry retired at the end of the 2018-19 academic year after 32 years with the College of Business.
  • Dr. Jenna R. Pieper, associate professor of management, examined how the presence of a referral hire affects the referrer’s behavior in “Referral Hire Presence Implications for Referrer Turnover and Job Performance,” published in the Journal of Management. She and co-authors Dr. Dennis Duchon, Dr. Charlie O. Trevor and Ingo Weller used data from a U.S. call center and found that the presence of a referral hire reduces the likelihood of the referrer’s turnover and increases their job performance. Though existing studies explore referral hires’ behavioral outcomes, Pieper’s research offers the first evidence that referring affects critical behavioral outcomes for referrers themselves. It speaks to the importance of referring and social enrichment in the workplace, and shows that referral hiring is even more impactful than previously thought.
  • A February report by the Bureau of Business Research and the Department of Agricultural Economics was cited in a June 10 Lincoln Journal Star article on President Donald Trump’s visit to an ethanol plant in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to tout a new E15 rule. The report found that Nebraska’s ethanol industry produced 2 billion gallons in 2017 valued at $2.8 billion, employed 1,453 people and contributed $13 million in business taxes. The story also appeared in the Beatrice Daily Sun, Columbus Telegram, Fremont Tribune and Norfolk Daily News. Read the article at: https://go.unl.edu/ethanolbbr.
