College of Business faculty, students and staff continue to excel in fulfilling the college's mission to drive discovery, create opportunity and empower individuals to lead the future of business.
Learn more about recent honors, appointments and publications at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business in this month's achievements column. The achievements of faculty, staff and students are grouped within the college’s three mission-focused goals of research + discovery, learning + transformation and connection + engagement.
 
Research + Discovery
  • Research from Özgür Araz, Ron and Carol Cope professor of supply chain management and analytics, was the most read article in Health Systems in 2020. Health Systems is a leading journal published by The Operational Research Society, which is a prominent international learned society in the field of operational research, with more than 3,100 members. His and his co-authors' research is titled, "The importance of widespread testing for COVID-19 pandemic: systems thinking for drive-through testing sites" and was featured in the Most Read Collection of articles.
  • A new study co-authored by Rebecca Jack, a doctoral student in economics, suggests remote schooling during the 2020-21 academic year contributed to “highly significant” learning loss. The Wall Street Journal highlighted the study in a Dec. 6 editorial. (This article requires a subscription.)
  • Troy Smith, Professor of Business Ethics and associate professor of management, was quoted in a Jan. 4 work advice column in Insider on gaslighting. Smith, who has conducted research on toxic bosses offered insight on resolving issues with your manager. Read the Insider article.
  • Eric Thompson, department chair, K.H. Nelson College Professor of Economics and director of Bureau of Business Research, was interviewed for a Dec. 26 Omaha World-Herald article on Nebraska’s economy faring better than those of most other states in 2021. The Associated Press version of the article has been picked up by the Beatrice Daily Sun, Columbus Telegram, Fremont Tribune, Hastings Tribune, News Channel Nebraska and 20-plus other media outlets.   • Eric Thompson discussed Nebraska's record-low unemployment rate in a Dec. 17 Omaha World-Herald article. Read the story.
 
Learning + Transformation
  • A six-member team of accounting majors representing Nebraska in Deloitte's Audit Innovation Campus Challenge placed as finalists in the national competition. The challenge asked teams to consider assurance as a tool to drive rigor and discipline to the reporting process for Environmental, Social and Governance standards (ESG) for company operations. The team will advance to the finals in April. Members included: Sam Edstrand junior accounting, economics and finance major from Elkhorn, Nebraska; Emily Kraai, junior accounting major from Lincoln, Nebraska; Brenna Paul, sophomore accounting major from Saint Charles, Illinois; Lincoln Rahn, junior accounting major from Sioux City, Iowa; Kate Schoenfelder, sophomore accounting major from Batavia, Illinois; and Mason Stahl, junior accounting major from Columbus, Nebraska.
  • Norfolk native Brian Saravia Mejia was featured by The Norfolk Daily News in a Dec. 29 article about his graduation from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln on Dec. 18. He earned a bachelor’s degree in supply chain management and will work as a supply chain analyst at Honeybee Robotics. Read the article.
 
Connection + Engagement
  • Five business majors were selected as New Student Enrollment leaders for 2022-23. They will participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of summer enrollment, transfer orientation, Big Ten Welcome, Husker Dialogues and other activities during the year. NSE leaders include: Jackson Anderson, management and marketing major from Prospect, Kentucky; Jack Kinney, business administration and advertising and public relations major from Omaha, Nebraska; Isha Kishore, finance major from Omaha; Vinh Phan, marketing major from Nebraska City, Nebraska; and Connor Utech, accounting major from Bennington, Nebraska.
  • Five students earned medallions in the International Business Medallion Program. To earn bronze, silver, gold or platinum medallion status, business students pursue experiences focused on career building, global citizenship and well-being. Erika Jimenez Johnson, senior international business major from Medellín, Colombia, received gold, silver and bronze medallions. Juan Rodriguez, senior international business major from Bogota, Colombia, received gold and silver medallions. Carter Lawson, senior international business major from Shawnee, Kansas, earned silver and bronze medallions. Students who earned bronze medallions included: Grace Hanson, senior international business major from Prior Lake, Minnesota; and Gabriella Lewis, senior business administration major from Lincoln.
  • Morgan Holen, MBA@Nebraska student, competed as Miss Nebraska in the Miss America competition on December 16. The Omaha native received a $4,000 Women in Business scholarship.
  • Colton Arias, a junior management major from Lincoln, won the bladesmithing competition show “Forged in Fire” on the History Channel for the second time. He won a $10,000 prize for the feat. Stories on Arias have appeared in KLKN, the Doniphan Herald, Fremont Tribune, Hastings Tribune, Kearney Hub, Lincoln Journal Star, Norfolk Daily News, North Platte Telegraph, Omaha World-Herald, Wahoo Newspaper, Waverly Newspaper and York News-Times.   • Eight business majors served as student delegates to the annual U.S. Naval Academy Leadership Conference. The three-day conference in Annapolis, Maryland, features renowned leaders in business, the military and the government as well as engagement in dialogue and networking with student leaders from other civilian and military institutions surrounding the theme, Resilience Rising: Forging through Adversity. Students representing Nebraska Business included: Ra’Daniel Arvie, management major from Omaha, Nebraska; Devan Buescher, Clifton Builders management and international business major from Lincoln; Marco Cuaran, economics major from Lincoln, Nebraska; Ryan Hakim, accounting major from Olathe, Kansas; Asaru Jordan, international business major from Douglasville, Georgia; Pat Malec, finance and Clifton Builders management major from Plainfield, Illinois; Karolin Murad, international business major from Sinjar, Iraq; and Haley Szymczak, accounting major from Bartlett, Illinois.
