School of Accountancy Inducts Mendlik into Hall of Fame

The School of Accountancy at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration held its inaugural Celebration of Excellence at the Lied Commons on September 15. Paul M. Mendlik received the honor of induction into the School of Accountancy Hall of Fame at the event.

Bryan Slone, executive in residence and assistant professor of practice in accountancy, presented Mendlik with the award. He noted the unique nature of Mendlik’s abilities and career as a testament to his place in the Hall of Fame.

“Paul’s career embodies all the traits of the people already inducted into our Hall of Fame,” said Slone. “He graduated from Nebraska and began his career at Deloitte & Touche where he advanced to a partner within nine years. He has served private and public companies as an audit partner, and is known as an exceptional technician and team builder. Those skills ultimately led him to become head of audit for Nebraska and Iowa. For most people in our profession that’s a career, but he started a second one after 25 years by launching a new career as chief financial officer at West Corporation.”

Mendlik’s community service record includes being active with charitable organizations such as the Board of Trustees of the Omaha Archdiocese Education Foundation and the Omaha Archdiocese Parish Foundation. He served as both president of the Board of Directors of Happy Hollow Country Club and chair of the CBA Dean’s Advisory Board, and is a member of the FBI Citizens Academy. He credits his success to values instilled in him at an early age.

“My parents taught me to pay attention to detail and make a commitment to doing things right,” said Mendlik. “I believe any job worth doing is worth doing right which still holds true today. My dad set an example through goal setting.

Sometimes it required taking risks of failure to achieve objectives that seemed unreachable. I believe you have to climb that mountain to get to those lofty goals.”

He told the audience one of his great prides was never having an issue with any regulatory agency during his career. Slone echoed those sentiments to the students in attendance.

“The goal of the Hall of Fame is to exemplify how incredible the School of Accountancy graduates really are,” said Slone. “When students read those biographies they realize the contributions our alumni have made are off the charts. It’s a reminder to our students of what they can accomplish. Graduation is just a ticket to what you can achieve professionally, and with your family and the community.”

Tim Christen, chairman of the American Institute of CPAs Board of Directors, also spoke at the event. He stressed the role institutions like the School of Accountancy play in assuring the success of the profession.

“The people that came before us laid the groundwork for us to build upon this profession,” said Christen. “I think about our stewardship in creating a pathway for the people who come after us to have greater success. Events like this celebration play an important part.”

Dr. Aaron Crabtree, director of the School of Accountancy, rounded out the evening festivities with recognition of current scholarship recipients.
