College of Business Huskers Enjoy Winter Break

College of Business Huskers Enjoy Winter Break
Students will spend their holidays going on new adventures and gaining meaningful experience.
Bringing the same Start Something attitude to winter break as they do to the school year, students at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business will spend their holidays going on new adventures and gaining meaningful experience. The three-week break, from December 15 to January 6, sees many students relax, explore and further their careers.

With the intent to celebrate the finished semester and rest after an ambitious year, Meggan Andrade, a junior marketing major from Grand Island, Nebraska, plans to spend the majority of the break in her hometown.

“I’m looking forward to the holidays with my whole family and getting to spend time with friends from home,” Andrade said. “One of my favorite winter break traditions is baking cookies with my mom.”

Meanwhile, Chase Caverzagie, a senior actuarial science major from Papillion, Nebraska, will travel to Benin in West Africa on a global immersion project-based trip. After interviewing Beninese and other African immigrants, the students expect to wrap up their project with a presentation of their plan to expand tourism and create employment for young people in Benin. Caverzagie shares how he looks forward to “experiencing a culture much different than my own.” This fall, he visited his best friend Will Schulenberg, who was studying abroad in Japan. "I especially enjoyed getting to challenge myself on a smaller scale before heading to Benin,” explained Caverzagie. “For example, Will had me try all sorts of new foods such as octopus and dried sardine, and he even taught me a few Japanese phrases."

Maggie Schlecht, a junior international business major from Elmhurst, Illinois, will join some of her fellow members of the Allan Noddle International Business Distinguished Scholars Program on a 10-day trip to Panama. She and a multi-disciplinary team of students prepared for the trip by designing a luxury sailboat marina in Panama. Follow her journey on her blog: http://ow.ly/wHJe30mvpBC.

“I am excited to create a business plan for a country I’ve never visited, as well as get to know the other students, faculty and locals,” said Schlecht.

Other students will spend part of their winter break gaining experience to help push them further along on their career path. E.J. Stevens, a graduate student in the master of arts in business with a specialization in intercollegiate athletics administration (MAIAA) program, plans to return to Lincoln, Nebraska, to work for Nebraska Athletic Communications at the men’s basketball game on December 29.

"One of my favorite sports at Nebraska is men's basketball,” said Stevens. “I look forward to collaborating with our media relations team to compile stats and game notes in addition to coordinating players and coaches during the postgame press conference.”

With the winter break, students get time to reflect and set goals for the new year. Looking to 2019, Nebraska Business wants to share how you are Starting Something this year. Share your Start Something story at: https://business.unl.edu/startsomething.
