Internships are a launching pad for many UNL College of Business Administration students on their way to building future careers. Tyler Brown, senior agribusiness major at CBA, spent this past summer interning at Dow AgroSciences. Dow AgroSciences is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dow Chemical Company and is one of the leading agricultural companies in the world with global sales close to $5 billion.
Brown previously interned with Sandhills Publishing during his sophomore year. The experience he had as a sales intern for Sandhill’s Machinery Trader
publication helped Brown develop his communication skills and get a feel for what it took to work in sales.
“I knew from early on in my college career that having actual work experience on my resume is what will separate me from everyone else,” Brown said. “In the Fall of 2010, I attended the career fair in the East Campus Union. I knew before I went there I wanted another internship in sales; however, since my major is agribusiness, I wanted to find an internship that had some kind of agriculture connection. Having an agribusiness major, the opportunities at these career fairs were endless. Agriculture is growing rapidly, and many firms were looking at hiring a lot of people.”
The career fair helped facilitate an interview for Brown with Dow AgroSciences the following day. Brown was offered another sales internship, but this time it was directly related to Brown’s future career aspirations as part of Dow AgroSciences’ Ag Chemical division.
“This internship was different from the previous one because it was field-sales rather than in-house sales. Due to the nature of the work and the geographical responsibility, I was able to work independently which required a high degree of time management, accountability and productivity skills.”
Brown was among a few interns selected to interview at Dow AgroSciences world headquarters in Indianapolis, IN. Recently he accepted a position with the firm as a fulltime sales representative which will begin following his graduation from UNL.
“I’m extremely excited to see what the future of Dow AgroSciences has in store for me!”
