CBA Offers New Study Abroad Program in Spain and France

The College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is offering a new four-week study abroad program to Spain and France. The faculty-led UNL sponsored program, called Husker Race of Spain and France, will begin July 17 and last until August 13, 2016. The application deadline is February 1.

The program will begin in Aix-en-Provence, France. The group will travel together to Barcelona and Valencia, Spain, where students will take classes taught by a UNL faculty member as well as professors at the Institute for American Universities (IAU). UNL students will participate in a project-based internship, where a company will present them with a consulting project. Students will present their solutions to company executives and industry experts in a global business competition.

“The program will also allow students to explore the three cities in a creative way - instead of having regular tours with tour guides, student teams will be given handouts containing important monuments and sites and asked to study the material before locating them with the aid of maps. This activity is similar to the TV show ‘The Amazing Race,’ hence the name of the program,” said Dr. J.K. Osiri, associate professor of practice of management and director of the international business program.

During each race, teams will be required to ask local people for assistance, make detours to purchase certain items in basic French or Spanish and to capture their experiences and destinations using their phone cameras. The first team to return to the starting point with all the necessary “proofs” wins.

No prior knowledge of the French or Spanish language is required to participate in the program, though a Spanish language certificate through IAU may be available for students who go through a survival cultural and language training in Spain. Participants will earn six hours of credit hours through a choice of management, entrepreneurship, business administration and Spanish courses.

“During the trip, students will stay with host families while in Aix-en-Provence, in hotels or student residence while in Barcelona and in a student residence while in Valencia,” Osiri said.

Although the program has a special appeal for business students, any UNL undergraduate student in good standing is eligible to apply. While a 3.0 GPA is preferred, strong motivation will be favorably considered for students with a lower GPA.
