2011 England-Clark Conference Celebrates 105 years of Doctoral Research in Economics

To celebrate 105 years of doctoral research, the Department of Economics and College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are hosting the 2011 England-Clark Conference on April 7 and 8, 2011.  Events include an opening reception at the Sheldon Museum of Art on April 7, an all day academic conference on April 8, and a concluding banquet. Twelve alumnae of the Ph.D. program will present their current research at the conference.  Featured speaker at the concluding banquet will be Keith Hall, Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Dr. Hall will speak on the current state of the U.S. labor market.

The conference is named after the first two recipients of Ph.D. degrees from the then Department of Economics and Sociology, Anderson W. Clark (1905) and Minnie Throop England (1906).  Clark was a much-loved humanitarian who founded the Child Saving Institute in Omaha, which still serves the children of eastern Nebraska.  England went on to publish a series of pioneering papers on business cycle theory and financial crises.  Her work is being rediscovered in light of recent economic developments.  England served on the faculty of UNL's newly established Department of Political Economy and Commerce from 1906 to 1919.
