Impact of Computer Technology on the Implementation of Just-in-Time Production Systems
US corporations have invested heavily in technology in order to halt their continuing and substantial decline in productivity and worldwide marketshare. They have, however, found that technology alone is not a sufficient response to the problems facing many industries in the United States. A growing number of US managers have come to recognise the value of an important element in the Japanese production systems: just-in-time (JIT). Managers of technology-based, or otherwise computer-based, manufacturing firms in the United States now face the need to integrate JIT with their manufacturing systems. The first problem addressed in JIT or computer-based manufacturing was the management of inventories. The reason why management received a priority attention is that the costs of inventories often represent about one half of a manufacturing firm's total expenditures. A reduction in those costs can significantly enhance the firm's ability to meet its competition. During the past 20 years researchers have expended a great deal of effort in developing ever more complex models to plan the flow of firm's inventories of materials. The models share one basic objective -- facilitating managers' efforts to bring materials into production processes at the right time and in the right quantities. Early research of the inventory planning problem emphasised the determination of material quantities and lot sizes. Recently, that emphasis has been shifted to the timing of material flows through the firm's manufacturing processes. The JIT production system, or zero inventory system, is intended both to optimise the materials delivery timing and to minimise inventory quantities by specifying delivery of materials to workstations as needed to implement the production schedule. Wartuck suggests that just-in-time (JIT) has gained such general acceptance in Japan that it may represent one of their managers' "ABCs of productivity".
