I hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving. It is hard to believe the fall semester is coming to a close. We have had a wonderful semester so far, and I want you to know how thankful I am that your son or daughter is a part of our community. Thanks for all you do from home to support your student. You mean so much to them. As we near exams and final projects, just keep encouraging them to work hard, stay positive and seek out the tutoring and help from our Teaching and Learning Center. You could even consider sending a care package.

Our college recently celebrated International Education Week, which promotes the importance of international experiences and how they impact education on a global scale. Our students represent more than 50 nations and territories, and students can choose to study abroad with over 20 program options through the college. Summer is the most popular time to study abroad, and this year Nebraska Business offers programs in China,England (Oxford), France, Germany, Ghana, Italy, South Korea and Spain. The application deadline for most of these summer global immersion programs is February 1. Please discuss options with your student and make sure they apply for the university’s study abroad scholarships offered through the Education Abroad office. Their scholarship deadline is January 5, which is during winter break. Find out more about these programs at: https://business.unl.edu/studyabroad.

Dr. Kalu Osiri, director of the international business program at Nebraska and associate professor of practice in management, shared, “Our international consulting in frontier markets during global immersion experiences set us apart among our peers. These programs enable students to learn about different cultures and business practices around the world. It also allows them to graduate with high emotional intelligence and global mindedness.

You will soon receive a call for nominations for the university’s Parents Association and Teaching Council Parents’ Recognition Award. This award is presented to faculty and staff who made a significant difference in students’ lives. It is one of the most meaningful they receive because it is a unique two-step process. Students share the meaningful experiences they have with our faculty and staff with you and then you choose to nominate that person. It means our faculty and staff impacted not only a student, but a family, in a positive way. Last year, more business faculty and staff were honored than ever before. It speaks to the strength of our community. If your student has shared with you the impact of a faculty or student member, I encourage you to nominate that individual for the recognition.

You have probably heard me talk about the collaborative creation and implementation of our college’s strategic plan. I’m excited to share with you that in the 2018 Nebraska Business Magazine, you can discover our college’s new mission, learn more about the quality research our faculty produce, explore how our distinctive programs are cultivating student success and more. It includes stories about how our faculty, students and fellow alumni are challenging themselves in a new era of excellence.
