I am guessing that most of you will be seeing your student more as they return home this summer to be with family, get summer jobs and recuperate from the academic year. I always look forward to the summer with my children because things are a bit more relaxed and we have the chance to be a family again. Some of our students enjoy taking an online class or two in the summer just to get a few more requirements out of the way. Others are sharpening skills through internships and gaining valuable experience studying abroad. I am hoping they all get a chance to relax, recharge and reflect on the year and what they want to improve upon come fall.

Next week, my eldest son, Eastin, graduates from Nebraska Business. For those of you with graduating students, I think you’ll share my sentiment that I might be more excited than he is when he walks across the stage to get his diploma. It will be a special moment as Dean and Mom to hand him his diploma. For those who can’t attend in person, you can watch the commencement live stream at I plan to cherish the time before he moves to Wisconsin in July to start his career.

Reflecting on this year, it has been a wonderful first two semesters in our new building, Howard L. Hawks Hall. Truly, it has been full of “Start Something” moments for all of us. In August, we celebrated the opening of this great facility with more than 900 members of our Nebraska Business community. While some may have thought moving into Howard L. Hawks Hall was a big statement, we weren’t satisfied stopping there.

Twelve new faculty joined our ranks. The CoB Huskers Shop finished its first semester and football season. We launched the Teaching and Learning Center, an important resource offering workshops and events to support faculty in the classroom and help students develop academic skills and confidence. Our actuarial science program celebrated its 60th year. As a program created out of partnerships with the insurance industry of Nebraska in 1957, it shines as an example of a strong program producing the next generation of business leaders the industry needs. This month, we celebrated another milestone - the 30th anniversary of the international business major - during the International Business Summit. It was a great celebration, which included student presentations about their global immersion experiences. Through these study abroad programs and internships, students are experiencing more of what it is like to do business on a global scale.

We launched two new online master of science programs in business analytics and finance. As big data continues to transform business, we are focused on preparing students for the dynamic workforce. There is a growing demand from employers for quantitative skills. With our proven track record in online learning, graduates of these new programs will be poised to advance their careers by translating insights into business decision-making, solutions and results.

We also partnered with the College of Law to offer any and all undergraduate students at the university a new law and business minorto enhance their degrees and employment options with legal knowledge. The collaborative program includes four courses (12 credit hours) taught by renowned professors from Nebraska Law, including former Chancellor Harvey Perlman. Students who have junior standing, a minimum 3.25 GPA and declare the minor with their academic advisor, can enroll now for the upcoming fall semester. The courses build students’ familiarity with legal concepts for jobs that don’t require a juris doctorate but require some knowledge of the law.

From academics, programming, to student development, many Nebraska Business faculty and staff have put in long hours working hard these last few months, and the results are strengthening our reputation for excellence.

After a fulfilling year, I hope your family’s summer is full of warmer weather and opportunities to recharge and continue to Start Something. Enjoy it! Then, we hope you will save the date for our Back to School Bash on August 17. Parents, students, alumni and everyone in our Nebraska Business community are invited to the fun, annual event in Hawks Hall Henrickson Family Atrium.
