William G. Altstadt Outstanding Faculty Award Goes to Dr. Bredthauer

Dr. Jeff Bredthauer, lecturer of finance at the UNL College of Business Administration, was recently honored with the "William G. Altstadt - Outstanding Faculty Award" for the fall of 2011 by the local chapter of Delta Sigma Pi.

"To receive an award from the students is the highest honor I could ask for," Bredthauer said. "After all, they're the reason we're here.  To know they appreciate the efforts I put into my teaching means everything to me."

Bredthauer, who received his Ph.D. from CBA earlier this year, was recognized with the award during his first semester as a full-time faculty member in the finance department.

"As a recent CBA graduate of the Ph.D. program in finance, I'm very excited to be teaching at UNL," Bredthauer said. "After many years working in the business world, I returned to school several years ago to earn my MBA.  During the course of my MBA program, I realized I had an affinity for finance and that's why I decided to pursue my Ph.D."

After studying engineering years ago, Bredthauer found it difficult to re-acclimate himself to the math skills he had once learned. Nevertheless, he even found a way to turn that difficulty into a strength.

"That experience was humbling and it gave me a new appreciation for the struggles that students sometimes have with math and finance.  I always try to prepare my lectures from the student’s perspective and attempt to explain things in a way that illuminates the topic," Bredthauer said.

Dr. Gordie Karels, chair of the finance department, noted Bredthauer’s enthusiasm as being a positive influence on CBA students.

"Jeff was an outstanding graduate teaching assistant and he continues to excel in the classroom as a full-time finance lecturer," Karels said. "He is a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher who is highly respected by our students. The recognition is even more impressive when you factor in the fact that the award was earned in a large-lecture, classroom setting."

Delta Sigma Pi is a professional fraternity founded in 1907 with the purpose of fostering the study of business in universities. The organization facilitates social activity and association of students in research and practice to help connect students of commerce with the business world.
